I worked in a county jail for 6 months until a family issue arose that was more important than my job. Working on second shift (245pm to 1130pm), on a 1 day forward rotation every 4 weeks, I never saw my family except on my days off and briefly on weekends before I went to work. The inmates will try to push your buttons and will be sizing you up on a regular basis. Some days will be very monotonous, others you will not have an opportunity to eat. And then there are the days when someone gets stupid right before shift change. It will certainly not be what you are expecting if your only exposure has been what you have seen on TV. Depending on the jails policy, you may have plenty of opportunities for overtime or comp time.
I had the fortune of working with a crew that had a lot of military experience with about 50% of us being retired. This made the job much more tolerable for me.
This is trully a job that you need to weigh the pros and cons of what you have now compared to what you expect from the jail. One good note about the county jails...the inmates are usually on better behavior as they are pending going to court and sentencing.
