Have not ever been shed hunting, but now that I have a place that nobody else hunts, I am going this year just to see what I can find, but as well, will give me a chance to look over the property for next year stand locations.

The way some make it sound meat hunters only go to the woods to fill the frezzer then stay home when its full lol.Non trophy hunters would be a better discription of of folks who are not consumed by antler size.Id saythey spend as much time in the woods as any other hunter Imo lol

Im not a trophy hunter, I am a meat hunter, usually try to take 3 deer per season, but wont shoot the baby either, have passed on a few because there was a little with her. But yes, trophy rack would be nice, need a match to the 9 point i have mounted. Maybe now since moved to Shelbyville and have a place to hunt that only 2 others have been hunting I have a better chance

I hunt for meat and I hunt for the Big Boys.Depends on where and when I'm hunting.I also hunt for Sheds. Shed season is the only time I scout my sanctuaries for next season. It is also when I'm scouting for turkey season.

i would have to disagree. if horns holds hold no value to the hunter, why would he stomp around in a cold woods to pick them up.

Maybe to see what he missed seeing, or to plan for next season hunt locations

Where have you seen anyone post "Horns Have No Value" to any hunter ??Just because someone may not be Obsessed with horns and horn size does not mean they find no value in them.I hunt for many things including sheds because I like to hunt and enjoy the searching and finding part very much. The same reason some people hunt arrow heads, metal detect, small game hunt ,it is also the reason many people fish. The searching and finding is just as much fun as the end result be it on the table or the wall.

Trophy Eating. Quality Deer Eating. Antlers are nice, too. So is whiskey.

Never gone out specifically for sheds but when I'm walking through the woods anywhere I'm always looking around for whatever I may find

I hunt for meat almost exclusively, but typically pass on some deer if I'm having a decent season and seeing more than usual. Last year was not really one of those years. My private land spot stunk. On public land I passed on a few baby bucks, but eventually ended up killing a 4-point after not seeing any does for an abnormally long time.
I've never been to the woods for the sole reason of looking for sheds. I could only dream of having the free time to do stuff like that. I have chores and other junk that I've been ignoring for MONTHS that I'm just now taking care of.
That said, I will certainly look for sheds when I have an opportunity to do late season squirrel or rabbit hunting. So far, I think I've found 2 in 10 years...lol
A shed is neat, but unless it was just something super rare, I don't get that excited about it. My dad and I found a really nice one last year that had been chewed on some. I'd say it came from a 130+" deer, which is bigger than any I've ever killed.

I don't understand why there has to be this such a line in the sand between trophy hunting and meat hunting. I think you can do both.

I agree. I try to fill my freezer with mature bucks and does.

Don't consider myself just a meat hunter, but I've never been shed hunting. I did find a shed once, by accident.

I've found more sheds not hunting for them than I have when I did hunt for them. I'd rather find a shed than a skull. My best (but not biggest) "shed" find actualy came after hearing 2 bucks going at it just over a ridgetop from my stand. Afterwards I got down and walked over to where they had been fighting and found a freshly broken off side with 4 points on it.

X10.......Just because I don't shoot immature bucks doesn't make me only a horn hunter . I also kill plenty of does to fill my freezer and others every year. I think I've donated to the hunters for the hungry for 5 seasons straight now as well...

Hunting mature bucks is, I believe, a legitimate pursuit, test of skill, etc. Hunting for meat is of course entirely legitimate and the ultimate goal of hunting. Pure Trophyism, unto itself, is a entirely frivolous pursuit.

I am obsessed with deer hunting and I'm obsessed with shed hunting. I love antlers, on or off a deer. I would rather pass young bucks and shoot older ones, an would love to kill a monster racked buck, but I don't at all regret killing a buck with one antler broke off and 3 pt on the other antler because I knew he was older. A 120 inch 5 year old next to a 130 inch 3 year old both broadside and my gun or bow is ready to shoot.... The 5 year old will die, but if the 3 year old is a 160 inch deer then he would die instead. So basically I care more about age of a buck than rack unless the rack is extra special....
I'll kill just about any deer though, other than passing some young bucks for an older one. I have been fortunate (lucky) enough to kill a deer from every age class from 0.5 up to 5.5 years old and got plenty of meat and had to borrow extra freezer space.
Nothing gets me as pumped about antlers though as shed hunting. I started shed hunting before deer hunting and my first 2 sheds were a fresh matching set. And I'm still hooked and will probably shed hunt some more tomorrow!
