My wife wanted a programmable thermostat for our downstaitrs unti of our home so a few years ago, I got one and put it on...

it worked fine for a while, but recently it is not working well at all.

it seems to have some sort of malfunction in the settings. I went back and erased all the programmed settings and went back to just HEAT ON and even then it doesn't seem to work right at all.

Right now, the thermostat is set on 70, but it is reading 61 and not coming on.....Now, some days it seems to work for a while and get up to the temperature that it is set for, then stops and won't come back on again....

Does this sound like a bad thermostat to those that know or is there possibly something else to look at....?

thanks so much.

I ain't smart enough for all that.
I just move it one way when I am hot and the other when I am cold.
That's about all I can handle.

Good luck though.

the next one I buy, will be a regular one......lol.

I think what I'll do is swap the two out and see if the one that works upstairs works downstairs and if so, then it is a thermostat issue. If not, then I may need to call a heat and air guy...

thanks for the encouragement...lol

Replace the batteries.unless there was a common wire ran to it it will not run unless the batteries are good.old wiring/new wiring ect.try that before you work up a sweat lol

sounds me like you have the right idea, change to two out with each other, but I would think that its the thermostat itself not reading the temp correctly,
the battery, I think just gives you the read out display and not the operation of the unit itself, could be wrong but, not totally sure.
Sounds like you have to heat/ac units.
I put one in back in July, with heat pump, mine seams to work great
set at 68 and seems to be working great.

Most of the therms now will run off of batt or low voltage from the unit,on older houses the therm wire may have not enuf wires to wire it up , the batt are only used for back up when there is enuf wires, when batt get weak it wont hold the fan relay & condenser relay in at the same time, only easy way to tell is change the batt,

Like I said, it runs fine some of the time. I just got back from the gym and the temp is right where it is set.....70.

When I left this morning it was on 61 degrees and not running, with the thermostat set on 70.

I think I will change out the batteries, just to make sure and see how it runs, before changing out the thermostats....

Step by step......thanks so much for the help guys.!

I think Mike is on the right track, and changing batterys is a lot easer than anything else to try.
