2013 Shed Hunting Contest

Time to hit the woods and find some fresh bone.

POST YOUR PICS OF EACH SHED IN THIS THREAD.
1. Each shed must be photographed and its picture posted in a reply to this thread to qualify.
2. Shed does not need to be measured unless it may qualify for Biggest Shed or Smallest Shed category.
3. You may put multiple sheds in one photo if you find a bunch in one day... does not matter, all that is needed is "pics or it didn't happen".

Contest opens Saturday, February 16.

Contest closes on Sunday, May 12.

Sheds found before February 16 will not qualify for the contest. Sheds do not have to be fresh from this year, as long as they are found by the contestant on or after Feb 16, 2013.

Winning Categories:
-Biggest Shed (Highest B&C score)
-Smallest Shed (Lowest score)
-Biggest Matching Set (Highest B&C score with estimated spread)
-Most Sheds (Highest number of sheds found)

RULES:

-Whitetail deer sheds only; no skulls or broken-off antlers
-Score using B&C (Please read instructions below)
-Shed hunting with dogs is allowed
-A pic must be posted of each shed to be entered. A separate thread will be started for the entries.
-Each entry photo must have something recognizable for size reference next to the antler, not behind or in front of the antler.
-Sheds are not limited to Tennessee if a member is out of state
-No sheds found prior to February 16 may be entered

PRIZES

This is a fun contest with no serious big prizes. Winners will get bragging rights.
HOWEVER, we got a couple small prizes donated as well...

nate17 is donating this slate call for winner of "Biggest Shed" category. Thanks Nate -

I will build a custom turkey tube call if anyone is interested, for winner of "Most Sheds" - I make them out of a solid piece of bamboo, will throw in extra latex to replace the reed, and will engrave the call with "Shed Head 2013". I know that not many people use a tube call, but you could keep it as sort of a "trophy" if you like. Best I can offer now.
This is one of my calls, but not the exact call for this contest:

Anyone else who would like to throw something in the pot, PM me.

CONTESTANTS:

If your name is not on the list, but you are sure you signed up, let me know, it's no big deal.

HOW TO SCORE SHEDS:
Read this even if you already know - there may be slight differences in how your score your antlers.

We will use the B&C system for scoring. I don't believe they have a method for single antlers, but I have adapted their system for the contest.

For single sheds, you will need the following measurements, in inches, to the nearest 1/8 inch:

-Length of main beam
-Length of all points longer than 1 inch (this does not include the tip of the main beam)
-Four circumference measurements

Add the above measurements together to score the shed.

CLICK HERE and read the instructions on how to measure points, beams, circumference, etc. Read all the way through the form to the bottom. Don't fill out the form; that is only for scoring a full rack on a deer.

MATCHING SETS

Score each antler separately as shown above, and add the two together for the total score.

SPIKES

For this contest, and I don't believe this goes by B&C, but for SPIKE sheds only, measure the length of the spike and one circumference measurement directly above the burr ONLY. Add these two measurements together for the score - hopefully this will keep it less confusing. This is obviously only for the "smallest shed" category.

--

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE

Nate don't go posting pics of my secret hunting spot...... I made that stand with FRESH pallet wood and a staple gun with LONG staples.

actually I found 2 stands today that were much more deteriorated than that one. one was an old climber with a plywood floor and a pedestal seat and it was secured with a black bungee cord and so was the wooden ladder with missing rungs.

I got up and checked my trail camera this morning and had several bucks with 1 antler and a few that had lost both, so i decided to venture out in the woods for a bit and stumbled upon these two sheds. I scored the bigger one and came out with 60 1/8th. That was my first time ever scoring an antler so let me know if that sounds off.

I walked for about 4 hours yesterday and found these prizes!

A hammer and assorted nails and brads and a
book on rocks and minerals that was very nice about 500+ pages with half being high quality photos. Wish it wouldn't have been soaked...

May have to start looking in the evenings when I get home though.

We hunted yesterday afternoon. We killed four wild quail, wore our dog out, and found a nice shed.

We were on a private 1000 acre farm with QDM practices in place for the last 3 years. Unless someone poached without our knowledge, no bucks have been killed in the last three seasons.

Sure hope to see this fella and his peers during the 2013 season!

On a side note, it has been wonderful to see the quail population improve in the native warm weather grasses and cut-over regrowth areas.

TNLandowner, seeing those wild quail is more exciting than a big buck anymore. One of my goals is to once again hear that "Bob White" call on my land. It's been at least 5 years and maybe closer to 10.

As far as sheds go, I haven't had but one chance to look and that was Saturday the 16th and I didn't find anything. From past years experience with trail cameras, most bucks around my farm still had their antlers at that time. I have one food plot that's still getting good use so hopefully something will show up around there soon.

I agree 100%! The quail population growth was an unplanned blessing that we didn't expect. Before planting the native grasses, we never heard quail. Now, we have 5-6 coveys thriving on the place. Our next effort will be to reduce the number of predators on the place. The Coyotes and bobcats have followed all the small game right onto the place. You can hear them howling at dusk everyday.

Good lucking shed. I also can't help but praise your dog:
Now that's an awesome shed hunting partner! Great job teaching him that skill. My Golden would likely grab the antler and run away. He hates to share...

I just found a fresh rub while looking today that still had hair stuck to it and fresh shavings on the ground. But some have dropped and some haven't, really depends on your specific area.

#7 and #8... my first matched set of the year, found em literally 1 minute after I was telling myself that a matched set was my goal for this year. Luck....

They are last year's sheds but in fairly good condition. 10 yards apart from each other.

Have not scored yet, they won't score very high, but I will score them if nobody finds a bigger set

catman, if you dont mind my asking, are you finding more sheds in open woods, in thickets, or in open fields? I have not yet found a shed, but i have found 4 skulls on public land.

Most of my sheds this year were in open woods, but I have found them in CRP thickets, open hardwoods, grassy clearings, and even in the middle of a crop field. Wherever you think the bucks are bedding, traveling and feeding.

found an old matched set 2 days ago and nothing since, past 3 days I looked in the same area and also found a very fresh rub, so I think a lot of bucks there are still holding. gotta move to another spot and give the bucks a chance to drop without pushing them out of the area..

ive been seeing lots of fresh rubs. I found a staging area for a buck yesterday that had about 15 rubs total prolly and 6 trees that were 6-8" in diameter that were shredded. ill prolly be back trying to find his sheds when he drops. no idea how big he is tho. ive invested most of my time trying to find the match to that big one until today.

Today's trip was ok, found 3 and 1 was fresh. Also found 2 doe skulls, old buck skull, and a buck skeleton that got hit by a bush hog an the skull was in pieces.

I will update later with the score on the big 6.

#9, #10, and #11 (right, left and middle)

Edit: scored the 6 pt at 68"

NICE!!!! I think that 6pnt shed will be about 75"

Looks pretty old but I'd be looking in that area during the season.

Dont you have friday and saturday off work? Doing any shed hunting this weekend? We could cover the ground better with 2 of us and your dog, plus I want to find the match to the #2 shed I found this year, it would make a nice set.

Don't answer those balloon notes, it's Hollar hunter trying to trick you into giving away the locations where you shed hunt.

#12, 13, 14, and 15. All of them are old, but the first 3 perfectly intact. #13 and #14 are a matched set and were a couple yards apart.

I have found more old than fresh sheds... also I can't figure out why the majority of my sheds are right sides.

dang! I think mudbone said it took him a few years of shed hunting before he found a left side. I have mostly rights too. I wonder if bucks tend to lose one side before the other.... Would be a strange coincidence if all of us found mostly right sides by chance...

Hope yall find some good ones soon!

If the contest ended today, Nate and I would both win our own prizes that we are donating \:D so we need someone to find a bigger shed and find more sheds than me or I will just move the prize to a different category...

If you two win your own category, just trade prizes.

I thought of that lol. I'd rather see someone else win but I guess I got too much free time during the day to find sheds

Nothing wrong with having time to shed hunt, wish I had more! Im gonna get up at daylight tomorrow and look on public then go check my cams and look for the big 8 and hope I stumble across the big 10's antlers too. He hasnt been around but he'd be nice to find since we found his sheds from last year. Will be a long day of walking and my legs are already hurtin from carrying shingles but its the only time I got and Im gonna use it lol

Catman,

What makes you think it is an old shed?
Pedicle is gray and there was a little vegetation grown over it.

I can't go tomorrow.. I promised a kid at school I would show him some good turkwy spots I found since I don't turkey hunt. I will try to start going a lot more though. My goal is to at least find one more. Before this year I had only found four in my life so 4 in one year will be satisfying enough lol I also had only found four skulls and found five this year. Its been a good year for how little Ive gone..will look for the big 8 soon btw lol

have you ever tried? Ever sat on a ridge or next to a creek and heard em gobble as the sky lightens? Had one blow up into strut when you let a few clucks out of your call? Had one gobble back at every call you make.... Obviously it's not gonna be everyone's thing, but if you haven't tried it, I think you should some time.

I talked with a guy today that told me he finds so many sheds every year he just carries em over to a tree and stomps em in the ground tines down so he wont pop a tractor tire on em. He did show me 2 150 plus bucks that he found dead this year locked together. Ill try and snag a pic of it tomorrow.. prolly one of the coolest things ive laid my hands on.

This is the left side of a shed I found a couple of weeks ago while turkey hunting in West Tn. He's off a typical 11pt. I scored him out at 69-4/8".

Group shot before I throw em in a pile with all my other horns.

21 total horns for the season. 3 were found outside the dates of the contest. 7 dead heads and 3 match sets. The dog is 10 months old now so she still has a lot of puppy in her, but she had 2 solo sheds and 1 solo dead head for her first season.

I didn't "participate" in the shed contest, but thought this was a good place to post the sheds I found this spring. Most were found "incidentally" while I was turkey hunting. Doubt if I had much more than 10 hours dedicated to looking for sheds.

Can't tell you how many years I've spent many days dedicated looking for sheds and not done this well, so I consider this to be mostly luck this year. This year's findings included one matched pair, a couple of "nice" skulls (unfortunately), and a couple pretty decent single sheds. The one I'm holding up was pretty massive and 23 2/8" long. It also had a split G-1.

All of these were found February, March, and April 2013 in Tennessee. Last year in the Spring of 2012, I didn't find half this many, and spent a lot more time looking, although did find a larger matching pair in 2012.

Wes, those are some great finds especially for being mostly incidental. Thanks for sharing.

I put in plenty of hours looking specifically for sheds and only found 1, maybe 2 incidentally. I need to get a group pic of all 22 of this year's sheds, as well as the skulls i found. In fact there is one spike skull that is still in the woods, because it still had flesh on it in march, and I want to go get it for my collection. Also need to borrow a shed I gave to a member just to take the pic. Then I can post it up.
