Depends a lot on the type person that hits the dog. I have been on both ends. I felt better about the person that stopped and told me and I felt better about myself for finding and telling the owner. I have also cussed the one that was moving on and didn't even slow down when they hit one.

That sucks. I took my son to the UT/ Vandy game last night. A mile from the house a doe runs in front of me and i almost drill her. On the way home in the exact spot something ran out so quick that i only caught a blur and then thump thump. Assuming a rabbit but not sure what it was.

It's a total crap shoot if you stop. You never can tell what kind of reaction you are going to get. I've had people threaten to shoot my employees before for running over their dogs. Others have been pretty understanding

Also, you could let the owner know how bad your damages are since they were letting the dog run free. I am almost positive that they are liable in that situation.

Exactly. No matter how admirable your intentions some people will let their emotions get the best of them.
I am curious as to what the law says(if anything) about this subject.

Yes it is better if you stop and tell the owner but doing the right thing is not always going to get you the best results. In this crazy world it is possible for you to be liable for the damages to the dog. Yes you may be able to sue the owner to fix your car also but in both situations the only people who win is the attorney.

Ive logged over 1.7 million miles (literally) in my lifetime, and in that time i have hit 3 dogs. I remember each one vividly and still feel bad about each one.

I think that depends on the type area you are in; subdivision , city, middle of now where. Sorry you hit it
Stop & look for a collar. If none are seen, continue on.
