I hit a dog tonight with my truck. I've killed possums, raccoons, and birds but this was my first dog. I looked down for literally a split second and when I looked up I saw a flash of brown and a flash of gray. The brown one got out of the way but the gray one wasn't as lucky. I locked it up but there was nothing I could do.

So what's protocol when you hit a dog? Are you supposed to go back and find it and try to find the owners or just keep going? I wanted to turn around but figured it might upset me if I saw it. And if it wasn't dead I would have really been in a pickle trying to figure out what to do.

I think that depends on the type area you are in; subdivision , city, middle of now where. Sorry you hit it \:\(

That's gotta suck. I hit one once in Dunlap, dadgum tire biter that was so focused on the car coming in the other lane that when he shot out of his ambush point he ran right across me. Heard him hit up under the fender and he shot back into the yard, but he had to be pretty tore up.

I always stop and/or turn and go back, but that is just me. \:\(

This thread brings back bad memories. I've lost a couple dogs due to being hit by cars and have hit a couple myself.

Sorry< I hit a puppy a few years ago right in front of the kids that owned it. Just like you, there was nothing I could do. It just turned and ran right under the truck before I could react. It makes you feel bad, But looking back at that incident, I really get mad at the owners for not supervising their pets or their kids.

If I were the owner , I think I would appreciate it if the driver stopped .just seems the decent thing to do. Sorry it happened to you.

I think it depends on location and time...if it's too late at night, then I know I wouldn't want to be woke up and also told that my dog was just hit.
Sorry about hitting the dog though, I hate hitting anything.
