I know I'm not the smartest kid on the block but why is our infrastructure even hardwired to the internet. I know it would be redundant work and not as simple to download to a connected system then upload any information after being secured to standalone system.

Money and time...
To disconnect from the internet would mean everything would have to be hardwired and then secured. The LL would take years to build and then you have have to physically secure it. If one spot is not under surveillance, someone could then phyisiclly tap into it. A physical network is also suceptible(?) to a physical attack. So, lets look at dedicated satellites...the signals can be recieved by uninttended individuals, signals can get spoofed, space junk can knock out a satellite.
With many of the technologies available on a network, they can be very secure...
Encryption
VPN: Virtual private network
tunneling
Access Control Lists
Firewalls
Intrusion detection and prevention

Its the digital age, everything is connected.
Sometimes even when systems aren't connected they can still be damaged by malware - see Stuxnet.
