I have a few friends that walk the river banks and pick up arrowheads. They keep asking me to go but when i ask if you are allowed to do that, they can't give me a good answer. I would like to go but don't want to get in trouble over a rock. Any help will be appreciated.

I don't know where you are in tennessee, but if you are on TVA land, you can get in trouble. Not sure about corps of engineer land.

They go on the hiwassee and the Tennessee rivers. I don't think they know the rules is why i don't go with them. I have found plenty in my grandparents garden and i know im not going to get in trouble there.

This is what TVA thinks of collecting arrowheads on their land.

those guys were digging. what about picking up visible, exposed heads? i know it is strictly enforced on the upper end of tellico lake(chota area) that you can't pick anything up.

Straight from the TVA website!

Am I allowed to collect artifacts or relics from TVA land?
The Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA) makes it illegal to excavate archaeological sites on federal property, which includes TVA land, without a research permit. Although there are no penalties under this act for removing arrowheads that you find on the ground, these artifacts are still considered federal property and you can be charged with Theft of Government Property if found to be in possession of artifacts taken from TVA property. It’s important to understand that artifacts by themselves do not tell us anything about people of the past. We need to know the context of the artifact—where it was found, for example, and what other items were near it—in order for it all to make sense. If you have discovered something that may be an artifact, the best thing to do is leave it in place.

You can be charged with theft!

The people in that article that were not digging were still fined $250 plus court costs. The one digging was fined $500 plus court costs.

Contact the Area Manager of the WMA. There is a regulation in the WMA Rules and Regulations that make it illegal to remove virtually anything from a WMA.

Check and get their interpretation for something like an arrowhead.

If it is land that TWRA does not own, then the actual owner may have regulations as well.

This was a big deal in AL. where im from and 8 years ago it was legal to walk the river bank and pick up arrow heads, but only surface finds. You weren't allowed to have a " flipping stick " That being said laws change and I as well would like to know what the current law is.
