In 1856, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that local law-enforcement had no duty to protect individuals, but only a general duty to enforce the laws. (10) In 1982, the U.S. Court of Appeals held that "there is no Constitutional right to be protected by the state against criminals or madmen. The Constitution does not require Federal or State government to provide services, even so elementary a service as maintaining law and order."

This has been affirmed several times, as recently as 2005.

It's shocking that most people don't know this!

Why would anyone know this when the patrol cars all say "to protect and serve"?

Well, that's why I bring this up. It is important that people, especially anti-gunners, understand this fact. I guarantee you that the majority of Americans would argue you with you all day long if you tried to tell them the cops have no duty to protect you.

Yep...actually, I was just "reiterating" what you said....most think daddy is coming to save them when that may not be the case in some instances

I think most LEO would not hesitate to go into harms way for citizens, we see this all the time when an officer removes a person from a burning vehicle or confronts an armed robber. The fact remains we as individuals are responsible for our own protection and must remain vigilant and able to do so..

Sad that our govt doesn't use the same mentality on creating laws for providing for entitlements for the lazy as well. And don't go off yet on me, I know some are in between jobs and all,but I'm talking about welfare generations upon generations and the like. ;\)

A lot of those "protection" scenarios involve stopping someone who is breaking the law anyway.

If someone is assaulting you, they are breaking the law, so a cop would be legally bound to stop them. Am I missing something there?

Seems like there would be a lot of overlap between protection and law enforcement. I guess it just depends on what definition of "protection" one uses.
