Hello gang
After bagging her first deer this year my daughter is chomping at the bit to go Turkey hunting. (Proud pop!)
She is small for 13 and can't handle a full size gun or 12 gauge. Don't want to turn her off.
She has a youth Remington 243 she shoots with no problem. Thinking single shot 20 gauge with full choke. Not one to take a 40 yard shot with her so no worries there.
Any ideas?

I picked up a mossberg turkey thug 20 gauge last year for my son. It shot so good i ended up shooting it all year. Weights like one a half pounds lighter than my 870 and has a retractable stock so it fits everyone in my family.

i have a youth 20 gauge its a Winchester model 1300 that can shoot 2 3/4 and 3's and my little cousin which is small handles it with ease. he used a 243 to and I think its pretty much about the same recoil as the 243. I don't even know if they make them any more tho

A 20 gauge single shot with a full choke and some 3 inch Hevis or XR's will do fine. Just shoot some paper and see how far it's effective. I'm guessing 30-35 yards. There will be some recoil though. Let her practice with light loads so she's familiar with the gun, but don't let her shoot the turkey loads until it's at a bird. No use making her scared of the recoil.

Thanks all-
If/when she is shooting at a bird, she won't care about the recoil for sure. I'll have to look at the Turkey Thig 20 gauge.
Agreed Spurhunter - one good knock at the range with a 3" load and her straight shooting may go out the window.

yeah I don't think youll have a problem with 30-35 yards just depends on what you and her are comfortable with her shooting. I think she'll be just fine though.

My daughter, 14 now, 10 or 11 when we started, has a Mossberg Super Bantam that she uses for turkey and dove. We started with a single shot, but it kicked like a mule. I let my daughter practice with bird shot. Like you said, she doesn't mind the kick when hunting.

I had him shoot it with 2 3/4" shells and when it came time to hunt put 3" shells in it (I patterned it with those when he wasn't home). Anyway he never knew the difference and still doesn't.

This is the best way to do it.
I originally got my daughter a Mossberg 500 bantam but, she had a hard time pumping it. Sold it and got an Escort youth auto. It has been a really good gun for her. She's killed 2 with the Escort and 2 3/4 lead loads.

I like the idea of shooting 2 3/4 and patterning with 3" when she is not around. She'll never know the difference.
