Anyone have any idea how was their seen structured before? The percentage difference doesn't appear to be that far off from what I've seen of other northern/mid-western States that offer very little in the way of a firearms season.

Problem is they have a ton of deer and really need to thin the herd from what i remember when I was up there. it wasn't uncommon to see 50+ deer in one field.

They only had 1 week of gun and if I remember right 2 weeks of muzzleloader. One early season and then a week in January if I'm correct. The state has a ton of deer and I think this will male it better.
I don't understand te urban hunts being eliminated. Those hunts were bow only. Does that mean you can gun hunt those areas now ? If so. Looks like I will be planning a trip to Lake county for the gun opener next year.

OHIO IS A BOW HUNTERS DREAM, WITH ONLY A LIMITED AMOUNT OF SHOTGUN AND MUZZLELOADING SEASON IS PART OF THE REASON THEY HAVE THE QAULITY OF BUCKS THAT THEY HAVE.I AM ON A LEASE IN SOUTHERN OHIO,AND WE HARVESTED 8 BUCKS OFF THE PROPERTY 3 0F THE BUCKS SCORED IN THE 140+ 1 BUCK IN THE MID 150+ AND 3 IN THE 130+ RANGE ALL WITH A BOW AND A 140+ BUCK WITH MUZZLELOADER. THATS NOT TO BAD FOR THE FIRST YEAR OF A HUNT CLUB

Illinois has been similar to this for many years.

I think they have about 10 gun days.

I'll be very disappointed if the entire gun season doesn't allow any does. SE Ohio is WAY overpopulated and further restricting the firearm harvest is only going to make it worse.

Update: read another article that explained it will be three either sex and one antlerless. The anterless expire before gun season.

I AM happy with the extension of hunting hours. I had three bucks bigger than anything I've ever killed in my scope (same time) two minutes after sunset last year. Considering deer rifles aren't allowed, I think it's VERY reasonable.

TX300mag What part of ohio do you hunt in ? do you hunt private or public ? I think high power gun season would be a bad idea,if something is not broke you dont need to take it completely apart to fix it,maybe just give it a tune up and it will work.I love to go up there and shotgun hunt, its like bowhunting to me you can see some gaints out there in front of you but just cant reach them.My opinion on tenn. season is we have way to long of a gun season and to big of buck limit.I dont think we will ever become a trophy state at the rate its going know.

SE Ohio private land.

I wasn't advocating a rifle season (although I wouldn't have a problem with it I guess) but rather agreeing with the change of hunting hours from sunset to 30 min after sunset like the rest of the world.

Although I have to admit that many people either did not know or did not care as I counted 12-15 shots after letting them walk off.

My thought after averaging 40 doe sightings per day: Ohio needs a Unit L! \:D

I have friends who hunt Ohio. And several who hunt Illinois, including me.
I can't speak for everyone, but in our group, those 3 or 4 day gun hunts in Illinois are INSANE.

Talk about dangerous! It sounds like the Fourth of July, except there are also the sounds of bullets whizzing through branches and smacking trees.

And the deer get HAMMERED. After the gun opener, forget it. They go almost completely noc-turnal almost overnight.

And talk about road traffic.

It is ridiculous.

Tennessee may have its' problems, but I would not want to swap them for Illinois!

I agree,to some degree, but Ive hunted both gun seasons in Ill several times, dont remember that big of a drop off in sightings on the second gun season. Was hunting Shawnee.

I've hunted Ohio the last few years and they are not reducing the number of "firearms" days. They used to have a week long shotgun season around the 1st of Dec. then a two day shotgun season around Christmas, then a 4 day muzzleloader season in early Jan.

It looks like they are eliminating the bonus gun season around Christmas and moving those days to an early season muzzleloader season (antlerless only). This should lower the antlerless population.

They eliminated the old early muzzleloader season. (It was only on 3 public hunting grounds).

The big thing I see is they are going to a County by County bag limit. I suspect they will lower the bag in some counties and leave it relatively high in the counties that have higher deer numbers.

FYI: In the county I hunt, they would ROUTINELY kill 5000 to 6000 deer on the shotgun hunt (That's ONE week of hunting) and somewhere around 1000 to 1500 on the 4 day muzzleloader season. They don't mess around up there during firearms days. The season totals are usually 8000 to 9000 including archery.

I usually see more deer on the 4 day muzzleloader season in January than I would typically see in two seasons hunting various counties in TN. My Tennessee hunting includes unit L.

I guess they don't have time to mess around and not take it serious. With that few hunting days, you better get out and hunt and hunt your butt off when season is open..LOL

When your passing up 120 and 130's within bow range. You got all the time in the world for a big 4.5 year old buck. It's a bow hunting paradise up there and I love hunting there

A friend of mine who has hunted almost all the mid-western states told me several years ago,"If you don't want to stop hunting Tennessee, don't ever go hunting in a mid-western state" . I know what he meant now.

I still hunt Tennessee but there is NO COMPARISON. I've never hunted the shotgun season so I can't speak about that, but hunting unpressured deer even into the late season is pretty cool. Even in January, deer walking around like they've never seen a hunter before.
