Was greatly blessed this season. Went through some ups and downs with the butcher shop letting my first deer go bad in the cooler. But in the end wound up with 2 nice deer in the freezer. Also learned to butcher my own and have already been enjoying the harvest.

While my last deer wasn't a monster by any definition. He was by best and largest so far. His body was quite big and his neck was huge.

Here's the european mount I just finished.

It was interesting to do to say the least. Not all that hard. Good friend gave me the beautiful piece of half-rotted oak. Really gave the mount some character.

Thanks for sharing in my second season deer hunting. And especially thanks to all of the great advice I have picked up on here.

Charlie

Great looking mount! And congrats on a good season. Do you know how old that buck was?

Forgot to add. Shot him with a Reminton 700 SPS Varmint in .308. Handloads of 168 SST's from Hornady. He was at 190 yards and scared the garbage out of me.

Shot, he bounded off and hopped the fence onto the neighbors property. He didn't flinch, hunch down, or run, simply bounded and hopped over the fence. Went back and forth as to whether I had hit him or missed him completely.

I searched up and down the fence line and where he was standing when I shot. No blood. Finally found 1 spot on a pine needle right at the fence line. My heart sank, figured I had just nicked him or something. When he had ran I could hear the hooved but never heard him go down when he crossed the fence.

After getting permission to cross the fence I carefully looked but found no blood. Heart rate was going up as my stomach was sinking at the prospect of wounding a deer when I spotted him. He was laying 20 yards on the other side of the fence across a log. That's why I didn't hear him go down. 1 shot, right where it should have been had put him down.

He was certainly in the rut as he was very musky smelling. Even while skinning him out he smelled strong and his neck was swollen up huge. Didn't get a weight (I"ll remedy that next year with a scale) but I couldn't pick him up by myself. Had to get the head and shoulders up in the back of my Xterra then crawl in and pull him up the rest of the way.
