IF you reload I would say 308, I loaded 168 Barnes TSX for deer and 125gr TNT's for coyotes and other varmints.
If you don't reload I would say 243. The 243 is offered in big game loads and you can find varmint loads too. It is hard to find varmint loads in a 308 from a commercial source.
Both are great calibers and usually accurate, you can't make a bad choice!
The Remington 700 SPS is a good bargain, not too mention the Savage with an accutrigger.

Ditto, and with the available "Reduced Recoil" factory rounds even a youngster can now start out with a 308 and then move up to "Standard" power rounds and even "light magnum" rounds all from the same gun!

Well if you are using it for deer that is a no brainer. .308 all the way. It is head and shoulders above a .243 imo and a lot of others also by way. Ifyou are only after groundhogs, coyotes and such the .243 is fine but better choices exist for those too.
If you like tracking deer around in failing light, in the thickets, with a 6mm hole punched in them, as a light rain starts to fall--get the .243.

What are you looking for? Low recoil? Deer hunting? Selection of ammo? Ballistics? Long barrel life? Lightweight? Do you reload? Need more info...
With that said, I have a .243, .260 and .308. B/t the three, I can tell you that the .260 is quickly becoming my all-around favorite caliber. It has great ballistic coefficient, high sectional density which means it shoots flat and hits hard. It also has very little recoil. The cons to this setup are that ammo. is hard to find for it and there is very little selection...This means I would not consider this cartridge if I didn't reload. Brass is another con for this rig since I own the other .308 based calibers. Therefore, I'm stuck with Remington .260 brass as I don't want to neck up/down other vendor brass due to mixing up headstamps. Barrel life on the .260 is more generous than the .243 but not as good as the .308. Other than that, I like them all for different reasons.
