Didn't see a deer in Henery co till the mid 60's. we went to stewart co even then if you saw a deer track you talked about it for two weeks. We where allowed one buck and he had to have at least one fork.

Bradley County had almost no deer in the 70's on the end of the county I lived on. We had literally thousands of Bowater acres to hunt and very few deer. I remember my Dad getting excited because he saw a deer track. The first cedar rub I saw was in 1981. You could hunt all season and never see a deer.

Gramps I thought you were describing Chuck Swan. I have a picture of my father and 5 other hunters taken at Central Peninsula "Chuck Swan". They all killed deer and they were all riding in 1 Plymouth station Wagon. The year was 1956.

I used to hunt Chuck Swan every year. Besides the draw hunts, there was always a non-quota bow hunt there in December. You only had to show up at the checking station to buy a permit.
The WMA's I was talking about were in what is now North Cherokee. They were Kettlefoot in Sullivan County and Johnson County, Laurel Fork in Carter County, and Clarks Creek, Bumpas Cove, and Rocky Fork in Unioci County. You can still see some of the old WMA signs in the woods in these areas. I may have left some others out, but it has been a long time.

From reading this it seems the TWRA and the sportsmen and women are doing a great job with the TN deer herds

I don't remember applying for doe tags at county courthouses but I do remember applying by mail and then having to go to county courthouses to purchase "left-over" tags. went to Bolivar many times. I also remember going to Big Sandy in the early 70's to hunt a private farm and passing 50-100 trucks lined up on the side of Lick Creek road waiting for the gate to be opened on Nicky Brothers land which later became Westvaco. But I really think we may be living "the good ole days" right now.

Stretch, you are right there are more opportunities now for deer hunters in this state than ever before. Heck I killed 3 this last season that right there tells you they have to be thick. LOL
