Went out to cheatham wma. Tons of nests and nuts but no tree rats! Any advice? Seems like they are hunkered down...

hit the woods at the crack of dawn, that is when I saw the most squirrel numbers during deer season. Also right before dark. otherwise it's hit or miss, sometimes they are out and sometimes they are in. They do seem to be out more on cloudy days too and I rarely see them during the middle of the day.

hmmm. Well here the wind was starting to pick up, and any more if there is any wind I don't bother going, cause every time its windy I get skunked. I'm hunting a little different than catman this time of year, cause here lately I've been starting at 2 pm and ending around 4-5 and getting 6 and 7 squirrels a trip...they do hunker down this time of year, but now they have no need of getting out and "cold" early in the morning (probably cause of the food they stored during deer season), so later in the day (around here anyway) is when they are out. Good luck next time.

I have only seen them out on days where there's at least some sunshine and not much wind. Once the wind reaches 12-15 mph almost all animals hunker down.

My yard was super active with the tree rats yesterday, ended up heading down the road to my aunt's farm and managed to get just one squirrel right before dark. Them again, I had a 10 and two 11 year olds in tow, so it was like herding cats, lol.

Thanks all! Seems like patterns changed. I hunted in the am with little wind. Might have been better in the afternoon....I do not think they move much in the winter...
Now I need to figure out if i get time away do I squirell hunt or fish....

If I am not mistaken this time of the year they don't use the "leaf nests" much at all. Think they use holes in trees and such now. Last couple of times I went I saw the same thing.... nothing.
I never knew that. Good squirrel FYI for me today. Thanks

I went squirrel hunting today, and the only ones that I saw were the ones in my front yard when I came home. But I did see 14 deer today...

Ive had more luck squirrel hunting in my back yard this year than 2 farm combined!
But like always, i couldnt hear my self think while deer hunting because of all their ruckus on the ground.
squirrels everywhere during deer season. Then as soon as the season ends the squirrels know their next i guess.
