What a shame. But glad you found him. I found a similar one like that last week, only I suspect the one I found was most probably just unrecovered after someone took a low-probability long-range pot shot (simply because I found him in thigh-high weeds about 500 yards from but in direct view of a rifle tower stand).

I'd also speculate someone might have had the thrill of shooting him (or shooting "at" him).
But then failed to find him.

I know what you mean about the briars. I actually wear my coveralls to prevent getting cut up.
