Went to haags ended up shooting a 308 . 30 target ASA rules. That is the best I've ever shot and it's amazing how much no snow on the targets and warmer weather helps with your score lol . The guy I was paired up with shot a 280 .

Caution: They are addicting. I shot my best score ever at an ASA sanctioned shoot last weekend in Florida. Shot 2 up on first day and was way down in the standings...barely top 20. Day 2 was a different story...shot 16 up and finished 18 up overall....and finished 3rd place. First ASA Pro/Am podium finish and only my 2nd big ASA shoot.

Congrats !! What class were you shooting in ? I'm thinking of going to Kentucky this year as well as doing the state ASA stuff . I'm just going to shoot bow novice since this is my first year shooting competitively .

Bow Novice is a super competitive class. There are ASA shooters that have been shooting on ASA level tournaments for 11+ yrs that still shoot that class. They have a $300 per year limit on winnings...if you win over $300 per yr you are suppose to move out of the class. BUT...ASA has a loop hole in how it does it. I think that if you ever win out of it, that you shouldn't be allowed to go back to it after a year is up. Yet I've noticed guys doing it quite often. The guy that won Bow Novice in Florida...he has shot ASA tourneys for several years...he's shot in Open C, and Hunter class...and has shot Bow Novice the last few yrs. He shoots a couple ASA's a year...just enough to not win out of the class...and every year, he goes back to Bow Novice. I think it should be that once you win over X amount of dollars...that you're out of it for good. That's how I plan on doing it.

I've shot bows a while and dabbled in local shoots but never competed in ASA level tournaments until July 2012...we shot the state shoot and then went to the Classic in August. I never thought we were ready for the ASA level of competition. It is fun though!! I hope to try and win out of bow novice class and not look back...go into either K45 or Hunter class next and stay there til I by some miracle, win out of those. Kentucky will be our next shoot as well. Maybe see ya up there or at some of these local shoots.

they wouldn't let me shoot novice after shooting hunter class and i was a middle-of-the-pack shooter. never won a cent.

There is way to many people shooting bow novice that don't belong in there.

I hope people dont think I'm sandbagging this year . This is my first year but today I kind of felt bad for shooting that well. But that was only my 3rd tournament ever . I shoot fairly well and if I win any bigger tournaments I will probably move up to hunter , just add a pin and a lense I guess .

That is good shooting—especially for only your 3rd tourney!
I agree with Ricky and Crow—bow novice is way to crowded with people that have no business shooting that class. I know it has been brought up before by the Competition committee and didn't go anywhere and probably will not unless a large number of people start complaining, or the Pro's start complaining, which they want as it has nothing to do with them—that is how the speed limit got raised for their classes only.

Here's the example I brought up...2013 Florida Bow Novice winner...search his ASA number on the ASA website, see what classes he previously shot and how much he's won in Bow Novice...excluding the 2013 win as it's not listed yet. He won $270 something for that: 17897. He shoulda already been out of Bow Novice class.

But all that to say...it just makes it more better if you can go and beat them when they've been shooting it that long. I mean everything is equal in the class...we all have the same equipment rules, shoot from the same spot, and it's all known yardage shots. It wouldn't bother me a bit if ASA took the speed limits out of the known yardage classes...because the advantage to speed is taken away: everybody knows the yardages. It would be more of a class for bringing what you got and shooting it...then, may the shooter who was on their game for the weekend, come out on top.

They will never take the speed limit out because of the wear it will cause on the target inserts and the money it cost these clubs for constant replacements. However, they need to do something because their speed limit requirements are not keeping up with the capabilities of the bow technology, and if their wanting to grow the archery numbers then they to consider that not everyone can afford more than one bow.

So in the big ASA tourny's , bow novice is all known yardage ? Up at haags it has been half known half unknown . If it is all known yardage I feel like I will be very dangerous to the + numbers this year

Yeah Bow Novice is all known yardage...40 targets. 30 yd Max. Hunter class is half/half with 40 yd Max. From looking back on previous ASA scores, it normally takes shooting 20+ up to podium finish in Pro Novice. When I shot 18 up in Florida, I was astonished it finished 3rd...one of the guys that shot in the same group as me down there shot 2 up the first day...same as me... and 16 up the next....just two points less than me the 2nd day, and he didn't make top 5. Scores are VERY tight and it's highly competitive. We jokingly call it Pro Novice. I was barely in the top 20 after the first day and clawed my way to 3rd. There was a girl in Women's Hunter that shot 4 up the first day and was in 1st place....then she dropped out to almost 20th on the 2nd day...pressure got to her after she found out she was leading it. ASA shoots are a bit different than local shoots...seems like there's a bigger excitement in the air and jitters hit ya that normally aren't there. I've figured out I have to mentally convince myself that it's just a fun shoot for no score...and I relax and shoot well.

I just shot my second tourny and still dont know much about competition shooting but I felt that the novice class that I shot the first time was to easy for me so I chose to shoot the K-45 class today and I must say it was more of a challenge. Went from a 195 to a 173. I kinda want to just stay in that class. Yeah its nice to have a higher score but I think the k-45 class makes you a better shooter. Thats just my opinion now.

Ya ... I'm planning on shooting in a few of the big ASA tournaments this year so I'm going to stay in novice for a little bit . After that I'll probably shoot the hunter class . The K45 class is no joke at some of the bigger tournaments and I would have no place in there with fixed pins
