All were released in the Cataloochee area, where many have stayed, though some have migrated west to Cades Cove – animals like the open grassy areas available in both those locations, Hillard said

I always thought Cades Cove was the perfect place for starting an Elk herd . It is grazing areas which Elk need . Cades Cove is in the center of the park surrounded by mountains so they are safer from poaching. Cades Cove will allow lots of people to see the Elk.

I have heard about them being there several times but have'nt seen any there yet. I may try to venture that way and see if they are out before my Co elk hunt in Oct.

The park boundary is actually on one side of Cades Cove, so the elk could easily leave. I have hiked from the dam to the cove a couple times and I have not once seen an elk...deer, turkey, hogs and rattlers are abundant though!
Hopefully I will see an elk this hiking season around the area.

The fields at Cades Cove are much larger than Cherokee and Cataloochee.
Since elk are grazers I figure once they get to Cades Cove they will like it a lot.
