Yes, the TWRA has really done a great job with our deer herd. And don't forget what a great job they have done with the turkeys.

I don't remember applying for county issued doe permits but do remember the AEDC WMA doe permits when they 1st started having doe hunts. It was in the 80's sometime the best I recall? Me & my cousin would get together one day about June and get the calender out and choose which hunt to apply for then wait very impatiently for months to see if we got it. Usually we didn't.

Like the other older guys, I remember back in the 70's when I was a teenager. There were no deer in our part of Franklin, CO. I distinctly remember the 1st two deer I saw outside of AEDC. It was a cold Fall/Winter day and I had been out with a shotgun chasing blackbird flocks. I came into my grandparent's yard and there were 2 does standing in the pasture beside the corn crib. They looked at me as my jaw dropped to the ground and then jumped the fence and took off. It was probably a year or maybe 2 or even more before I saw another. That was the later part of the 1970's. As years went by, tracks became gradually more and more common but deer sightings were few and far between.

There's no doubt, we are in the golden days of deer hunting. Especially if you use total Deer numbers as a measure of things. But beyond sheer numbers I think that with time the age structure of bucks will continue to improve from what we have. I say this because the abundance of good bucks is making more and more hunters selective about what they shoot. A large number of hunters get tired of shooting the same old 1yr old 6 point at some point and start holding off on the old trigger. We'll probably top out with 3 1/2yr olds as far as anything like a huntable number of bucks but, that's not bad at all if you lived through the times when there were zero deer. \:\) The biggest problem I think the deer herd has now is people and their houses/malls/roads etc. destroying habitat. Fortunately deer are very adaptable and will live right beside us if we just leave any cover at all.

opening day of gun season was on a Friday? I remember it. It seems like it was 1968 or 1969. If someone else is old enough to remember the exact date, you can post it.

I'm not to sure about 68 or 69 but in 1972 the season opened on Thursday...one week before Thanksgiving. I hunted that day and actually saw a doe. My season was over the following Thursday when I limited out with a 170 lb field dressed eight pointer.
