One more question what eats better a sow or boar?

We raised show hogs for several years. Used a 16x16 pen made from hog panels against the barn so they could get in from the weather.

We would always get them in October at around 50-60 pounds. Feed them straight pig zipper from coop until they hit 110. Then pig grower until they hit 200. End with pig finisher up to 250-260 by January.

Top dress the feed once a month with safeguard dewormer pellets.

Just how we did it.

As for male or female, If its male, make sure it's cut or you'll get boar taint.

My late brother raised them for 3-4 years till he got too bad to handle. I always ended up with the job of cutting the little piggers , We killed a boar once and it was too strong to cook in the house ! mucch less eat !
Now, you talk about salt curing and making country ham , that's an art too and you can lose the whole batch If not done right. Just the right amount of salt at the right temp for the right amount of time or it will ruin. Nothing worse than cutting into one and next to the bone you find skippers , You then get to trash the whole shoulder or ham !

My brother in laws dad had the last commercial pig operation in our county.. you pretty much have to feed a hog everything he eats.. from what he has told me.. there is very very very little profit in raising hogs.. you might be doing it for the pleasure of it which is a whole different ball game.. good luck!
