Our property backs up against the TNWR at Cuba Landing and due to the doe requirement three of us have taken 3 does total in 5 years of hunting. The forest is old so there isn't much cover and acorns are about the only food. We keep going because it is a bonus hunt and we enjoy the camping. I have seen 3 bucks in those years, all 1-1/2 years old.

No Cross Creeks is different. Both TNWR and Cross Creeks use the same permit system so they seem to be lumped together.

I hunted the refuge a few times whent hey first opened it to hunting. As I recall, I killed a couple does during bow season and a couple small bucks during gun quota hunts.
As with any place, the key was advance scouting and blind luck.

My place backs up against the Duck River Unit of TN NWR as well (although farther north than Cuba Landing), and things have really changed on the Refuge over the last 5 or 6 years. First, the bottomland population of deer was hammered by the '07 EHD outbreak. Second, the continued use of "Earn-A-Buck" harvest regulations has further decimated the deer population.
That NWR used to be some of the top big buck hunting in the area. Now, I hardly see any deer at all on the Refuge, and we no longer have deer moving off the Refuge onto our place. There simply aren't many deer left.

There simply aren't many deer left. I believe that was the intended result. In this case, I believe the refuge managers don't want ANY deer on their waterfowl refuge.

We had luck hunting up there and I assure you there are still big deer there. It took walking just about the whole dern thing to find a good spot though.
