All right I'm not sure if this has been asked here before.

Who starts seeds indoors, and do you use a window, grow lights, or a greenhouse?

I use three 4-foot fluorescent shop lights. Only downside is having to harden off the plants before transplanting.

The 4 ft shop lights work well. You need to be able to move the plants or the light to keep them close together. If the light is to far away your plants will be leggy. You have better results with fresh bulbs if you use your lights all year. A small fan that indirectly keeps air moving around the plants will make hardening off much easier. The big problem most people have is Damping off. If you don't use sterilized soil and don't let the soil dry out good between watering. I always start a few things early .Hard to get tomatoes and some of my Heirloom seeds.

I start my seeds indoors under 4 ft shop lights. I harden them off before planting in a cold frame.

I may need to get new tubes for my lights because I do use em year round. I always use fresh staring and potting mix (just bought seed starting jiffy mix today) so damping off has never been an issue for me.

Dumb question, but do you ever have problems with smell or bugs indoors?

I don't really have a great place to start seeds except for in a big closet neat the kitchen. A few years ago, I started persimmons seeds in there. I had a big problem with those flies that sort of look like fruit flies only bigger. I controlled them with Sevin, but they'd come back. Wifey put the kibosh on the whole indoor planting idea because we had those annoying flies all over the kitchen.

I have never had a problem with smell or bugs. I start my seeds under grow lights on a shelve in my basement where it stays kind of cool.

Sounds like the soil was to damp. It is important to let the soil dry out between waterings.

How long do you leave your lights on? 24/7? Or just daylight hours? Are they set up on timers and if so where do you get them? Thanks...
