I put the calipers to a M1 .30 carbine bullet the other day and got .304 dia. I was right up against the case, but I can only find .30 cal bullets that are listed at .309 dia. Is it likely that the bullet was seated past the diameter and starting over the tangent point of where the diameter and cone start, thus giving me a slightly smaller reading, or should I still be looking for .304 dia bullets?

Thanks for any advice in advance. \:\)

Yes, 30 carbine is .308 diameter. The 110 grain .308 round nose bullets are what I use in 30 carbine.

Thanks 348W. I guess that bullet is seated a little too far into the case then on the one I chose to measure.

I've never reloaded for my 30 carbine but if I did, I'd start with the Speer plinker bullet. It's the cheapest bullet out there suitable for the carbine and is a .308 diameer bullet. It's the one with the entire lead round nose exposed in front of a short jacket. I used to use them in my 30-30 for fun plinking loads.

I finally found some of those H257! Only they were Hornady 100 grain. Just a lead cone and copper jacket body. Picked them up ar SW Sat. ;\)

\:D My only regret was leaving that one box behind...still can't figure out why. I guess the shock of finding them, PLUS those sr primers was just too much for me. \:D

Let us know how the reloading went. My buddy is a prolific reloader and those little carbine bullets have been giving him fits. Bullet seating appears to be the problem and getting them to ultimately function in the rifle.

Just an update to say I shot 15 rnds a couple weeks ago with the Hornady 100 gr plinker-type bullets. Used H110 and 5 rnds each of 14.5,15.0, and 15.5 gr. The 14.5 gr was the slightly better load for my rifle, but I did have two jam on me. Just a slight pull back of the bolt and the cartridge popped up and went on onto the chamber tho. No jam on the 5 rnds loaded with 15 gr, just the other two loads, if that might be a factor.

One of the things I have found out about reloading for the 30cal. is the cases have to be the right size not to long and not to short. They head space on the case.

I had forgot that Hornady made a similar bullet to the Speer that is more or less designed around the 30 Carbine. In normal times, you would buy a box of each and see which worked best for you but with supply like it is now, you take what you can get. This is the Speer I have used:
http://www.speer-bullets.com/ballistics/detail.aspx?id=78

I've never loaded the Hornady. Speer also makes a flat-nose jacketed hollow point that might feed in a carbine. Unless you are trying to hunt coyotes or something with it and need the expansion there's not much use in bothering with them though. Again unless that's all you can get.

H110 under that Hornady bullet should be a match made in heaven.

My carbine has an anoying habit of whacking the shooter on the forhead with practically every ejected case. Rather than try to fix it, I just bought a clip on brass deflector.
