I am looking to buy my first one. Any recommendations for a unit? I want to stay around 300 or less. Will be an aluminum boat not sure that matters.

What do you want to use it for... I know that sounds stupid but if you want to find fish and get a good idea of what you're looking at then they cost a little more. If you're just wanting depth and temp then $100 Is around where a decent one starts. Don't get me wrong, the $100 finder will show fish but it's a little more cluttered with false readings.

Good starter models from Lowrance are the X4 models. Then you step up the Elite 4, 5 and 7 models. From there you get into your HDS 5 and up models.

If you need GPS that a whole different price range.

If you're just wanting a 2D fish finder that shows depth, temp and a great fish finding model I would look for a used HDS 5 model. The one without GPS is the HDS 5X model. Used you should have no problem with the $300 range. Bass Pro had them new on clearance for $350 a few months ago.

The bigger the screen the better in most cases. Color is another BIG plus. An aluminum boat means your transducer has to be mounted on the exterior either on the transom or the trolling motor. A poorly located transducer will make a $3000 finder work like a $50 finder.

You can check YouTube for some videos to help with location of transducer mounting... Easier than trying to tell you but make sure you're watching a reliable video, not one made under a shade tree. Also check reviews on the model you choose. I only speak of Lowrance because I feel their 2D units are superior to Humminbird. I have a Lowrance HDS unit for 2D sonar and I use a Humminbird for mapping and side imaging.

With the new models now out chances are you can get a good deal on a new unit that will fit you.
