What is everyones opinion on red dot scopes to help my 8 yr old get first turkey and what kind do you prefer?
Have been successful with red dots, no magnification. Two-eye acquisition is great training tool as well. Never take your eyes off the “prize”. Considering most are short range shots the way to go. You need not go “high” dollar, although be sure it has good range of brightness settings.

Nikon red dot on mine. It has adjustable dot size and light intensity. I really like it.

...Or, you can just add a rear sight to your shotgun.
It seems to me that scopes for turkey guns are solutions in search of problems.

My gun already has a factory rear sight but I'm trying to make it as simple as possible. He can shoot a scope but has trouble keeping his head down on the stock of the shot gun. My gun has the knox stock so it can be adjusted but dont want the scope to get the best of him if he makes a mistake. Gonna borrow a truglo red dot from a friend and see how he likes it before I buy one. Thanks for all the help.

Just my opinion, but I do not believe that an optic is a solution to any shooting form problem, regardless of the shooter.

We use the Burris FastFire's on our turkey guns. They are small, waterproof, tough, and super easy to use. My daughter loves the sight. There is no parallax with them, so put the dot on the turkey and shoot. Doesn't matter where your head is.

On a foggy spring morning in low light conditions it is nice to have a red dot. Works great in the evening as well. Similar concept as an illuminated rifle scope in terms of easier target acquisition in low light situations. It's certainly not a must-have, but definitely a nice-to-have.

100% agree, both eyes open when the red dot is on target…. Send it!
Same procedure with my hand cannons.

It happens, although extremely rare.
I was fortunate enough to acquire a Charles Daly “Ducks Unlimited” Camo signature addition 12 ga auto. Change the choke out and great turkey gun as well. The biggest gobbler I have ever seen came strutting up. Had him in sights, squeezed the trigger and “CLICK” ……. Oh %@#$…. I didn’t chamber a round! How am I going to cycle this without him hearing/seeing. You guessed it, off he went. There was a round in the chamber! 100s of rounds at ducks and never had a misfire with (using hevi shot). Should that happen again this year I only need to squeeze the trigger again, this year I’m lugging an OU on my hunts.
