Dad would say swap (I say trade)...

He always said oncet and twicet

He said sack or poke (I say bag)

If we were going somewhere and I was in the backseat sassing him he would say "don't make me backhand you boy"

If I was sassing Mom she would say "don't make me cut a switch"...upon saying that not only me, but all the kids for miles around straightened up! Dad's version was "don't make me get a belt"

Dad said stout (I say strong)..like he was a stout feller

Dad would say "don't make me come over there boy"...one day when I was in my teens I jokingly said to him "don't make me come over there Pops"...and he replied "you'll limp back"

If I left the door open "you raised in a barn?"

If I left a light on "you workin for the power company?"

Standing in front of the TV..."you'd make a better winder than door"

When he fell asleep in church (every Sunday) he would say he was just resting his eyes...

He'd say "so and so is a pine knot"...meaning they were tough

Mom would say "I swaney"

Haven't heard some of these in years...

If you were around me enough, you would hear most of 'em or a little variance of them. \:\)

One thing dad said to me once has stuck and been a good life lesson. He told me to clean up the garage and I said why its just going to get dirty again he said " boy do you wipe your but after you take a crap?" I said of course he said "why it's just going to get dirty again". I cleaned the garage up and never questioned it again lol.
His famous words for napping are " I was checking my eye lids for cracks" lol

One of my favorites from Dad, talking to my Brother and I.

"I'd break one of your arms off and beat the others brains out, if I could figure out which one of you had brains".

It has been pointed out to me that I have perpetuated many of my dads sayings. My son "collects" them. He wants to make sure he gets them right. I miss hearing my dad saying.."boy if you fell froggy, jump. I'll put you back on your lily pad" or "boy if you had a brain you would take it out and play with it", among may others. Nothing like our fathers sayings.

Great post. Got me thinking about my dad. I only had him for 19 years. If yours is still living cherish the moments.

Oh, gosh, this brings back so many memories. For the last couple of years of my mother's life we had her make some audio tapes in which she told things about her and the fanmily's life. We now have those on CD; it is really nice to hear her little expressions and stories.

But I do have a question. A favorite by-word of my dad's was "jobbed". Examples: "Flat tire had a jobbed ol' nail in it." "I tripped on that jobbed rock."

I can't recall ever hearing anyone else use that expression. I have no idea what that means. Anyone else heard/say that?
