I would put it in the same catagory as night vision equipment that is illegal to have if in possession of firearms or archery equipment between sunset and sunrise. But, it isn't clearly specified in the regulation.

We will try to clear it up during this year's season setting process.

I am just curious here as usual - no intention of getting night vision equipment in the foreseeable future - but if you buy some thermal image device for watching wildlife at night without a weapon of any kind, is that legal? Just for pure observation purposes.

So if I have a thermal imager in the tree while bowhunting it would be legal. Because that is during daylight hours.

Thermal imager is a great way to track a blood trail. Warm blood can hold heat for quite a while, along with that a dead deer in thick brush could easily be detected with it.

that might actually be a useful tool, for those bow shot deer that go farther than you expect without bleeding much.

My thoughts exactly...

I think a handheld unit should be legal at any time. No way to really use it to poach with unless it is mounted to rifle and can be used as sighting device

Would love to have a good one but several thousand dollars--more than 5k ---is out of my pocketbook.
I used them for years in industrial use and played with them on the side. Lot of fun.
