Is it just me or are these words mentioned constantly in the news lately. What's: the definition of an assault weapon? To me it would be any weapon that's used in an assault.

There is no such thing. Assault is an act committed by a person with anything they can wield from fists to tire irons to guns. It is a term created by the media to scare fools.
The German STG-44 could possibly be the only real assault weapon since sturmgewehr translation means storm rifle.
