Been there many times for work and for fishing. Too dark and cold half the year. East Tennessee is better, in my opinion. I could live in ALaska from May - Sep. They make some fantastic beers there.

I was told by a guy that use to live there that he would never go back. He said the native's hate "outsiders" and they basically treat you like crap. He also said that the alaska fish and game department will just decide to close hunting seasons in certain areas for no apparent reason so people that have planned trips up there from the lower 48 go through all this planning and purchasing plane tickets just to find out a couple of weeks before they are set to go that there trip is cancelled and there is nothing they can do about it. He said its sad because when they do that, there are outfitters that depend on that income to make it through and they are stuck if their area gets closed to hunting and fishing.

Try the low hills of Mid TN, or even the hills E TN
or heck, just try Southaven MS, LOL

I worked in wasilla one summer and loved it. We did community work for the town, a local church and a salvation army camp and never had a problem with any of the locals. They were some of the nicest people I have ever met. I told my then girlfriend (now my wife) that if I hadnt been dating her I doubt I would have came back.

I love watching the shows about Alaska. I'd like to live there during the warm months, but couldn't take the winters.

It's on the bucket list.
Maybe a dad/son fishing trip for his HS graduation gift in a few years.
