My 07 Ford explorer is done for. Tranny started getting real bad this winter. I bought it with 40k miles on it and it started slightly slipping around 50k. Pulled a 1500lb boat a few times this summer And the transmission started slipping real bad around November. I refuse to believe pullijg the boat less than a dozen times caused this. The explorer always slammed into reverse and changed gears really hard.

I was told I had to have a new tranny yesterday. $3500. My wife just got a new car and we have a baby due in two months. Not good timing, but I'm getting rid of this garbage. Too many issues with it, not to
Mention I just replaced radiator on it. I believe explorers are known for tranny issues. It would be that big f a deal if it hasn't been slipping since shortly after I bought it.

Now, I am looking to spend 17k or less when I trade this explorer in. I need something to pull my 84 bay liner. I have been looking at Tacoma and tundras. Not sure if I trust domestics anymore. Last vehicle was a z71 and it did fine for 5 years. Any thoughts? Advice?

When shopping used cars...how much does mileage matter to you? My wife has this idea in her head that we shouldn't buy over 100k miles in a vehicle.

For me its all in my budget. If I am going to spend 17K by no means am I buying a vehicle with over 100K miles. Most midside trucks have a towing capacity of 4500-6500lbs so a Tacoma or newer model Frontier would work great for a 1500lb boat. I have a Titan and love it, but gas mileage is not great at all. I don't think you could go wrong with a Toyota or Nissan. One of the happiest days of car buying I ever had was when I got rid of my Colorado.

17k for a used vehicle, you better be well under 100k miles. I stay under 100k miles on gas vechiles anyways. But now I deal more with diesels, and mileage is less of an issue with them. deals are to be made, just talk with the dealer and try to knock them down. it can happen. My f250 7.3 powerstroke was listed at 20,900. I got it for 13,000. And very low miles for diesel, less then 120k when I bought it.
Had a work truck that had the 7.3 powerstroke that had 1.4 million miles. So hopefully she lasts me that long.

Mileage-wise it all depends on how it has been used IMO. My current truck[GMC-93} had 106K when I bought. It had been driven to work basically by an insurance agent for 7-8 years. It has 200k on it now and the biggest expense I have had is replacing the radiator in 10+ years.

Ahh this is a bit stressful because I don't know where to start now. I made the mistake of buying piece of junk explorer. I just have to get something decently reliable.

So determine how it has been driven? What is good news/bad news as far as how it has been driven in the past?

I found a couple private sellers with vehicles I like. I want to trade my explorer in and not fool with selling. Is there a way I can take the trade in value from dealership and finance the difference if I bought from private seller? How would that work?

Also, one of the vehicle I like needs new tires and has a minor rip in drivers seat. Is it common practice to ask seller to fix these and purchase the car for slightly more? That way I could keep from financing new tires separately.

Whom was the previous owner, what kind of job did he/she have? Was the truck a work truck or a commute to work truck?

I have an F450 listed on Craigslist with a link here in the classified adds. It will pull anything you have and the house too. Can get you in it for less than asking price on Craigslist. May be a little more truck than you are looking for but I saw a chance for a shameless plug. I see you ain't to close to Franklin either. Thanks, and good luck.

You can sell it to CarMax...give you about what you would get in trade.

This ^^ is a good idea to sell the way you were wanting to, you wont have to mess with selling and will get what a dealer would give you for trade in

I just recently traded in a 2007 F150 supercrew 4x4 with 49k miles and was given 17,500 on paper if that gives you an idea.
I bought it new and was in EXCELLENT shape with a few add ons like bed cover, BFG AT tires (21k miles), tinted window, husky liners etc etc.

Good luck with your search !

Edit: It still had 20k miles left on extended warranty also !
