wrong forum but I don't really have a preference, but you can get a decent scope for the same price as a red dot. you don't need anything real flashy.

I think it's a darn good idea. One of the biggest mistakes kids (or adults) will make is taking their head off the stock and shooting high. A red dot will bandaid that tendency. I'd be wary of the cheaper ones. I'd worry about POI shift under magnum recoil. The Trijicon RMR's are nice!

I would not advise one for anyone.. I put one on my daughters 223 when she was about 8-9.. sun came up.. deer came out about 30 yards.. I cocked it and kept waiting on her to shoot.. she never did.. finally it left and she said she could not see the red dot.. well i took it and sure 'nuff.. the sun was behind us and the dot was completely invisible.. not matter what setting you put it on.. i took it off..put on a fixed 4 power and she killed one that evening..

I don't want a scope due to recoil maybe hitting him when he shoots so figured red dot or something similar would work better.

I have a Pentax scope with circle and crosshair reticle on it that I love on my turkey gun. I got it at the advice of Harold Knight. He told me one spring he had three clients in a row miss their turkey due to lifting their heads. He put a scope on his "client gun", and has not had a turkey missed since.

There is enough eye relief that scope eye is a non-issue.

I use a truglo red-dot gobbler stopper It has a red circle around the red dot or green circle around green dot comes with both, easy to line up. Also if don't like red dot I put a Bushnell Banner 1.75x4x32 with circle x reticle on girlfriends shotgun she likes it.

I cheap way to keep your head one the stock. I shoot a dead ringer awesome sight and it keeps you to keep your head down and you don't have to worry about your eye getting scoped
