Any way to break a dog from treeing possum? Dog hunts good trees hard but 9 out of 10 trees its a possum!

Shoot it out and tie the dang thing to its collar. Let the dog wear it for a few days and he will never want to smell a possum again.

Nope.......... Don't even want a dog that trees coons. If you need a good Conndog, I know where you can find some. They would be down in Florida in my old backyard.

Coon hunting 101: You never shoot anything out to your dog that is not a coon.
You are rewarding him for treeing a possum. The old timers would beat it out of them.
Don't give-up. I saw a possum dog turn into the best coon dog I have ever been in the woods with. A shock collar will break him.

And sometimes you have to cut bait and move on. One thing I have learned about good coon hunters. They never get to attached to their dogs.

Right. A young dog will get a good full season if he shows he is learning and wants to hunt. After that they become someone else's problem. Hunting a dog hard... Several times a week is what it takes.
If it's an old dog they can be broke but it may break you in the process. most of the time it's not worth it. Hunting near residential areas increases the number of possums usually. They take the easy meals and the road kill.

Turn him into a straight possum dog. Plenty of possums and will usually tree pretty quick. I thought about doing that.
Tri-Tronics will work. You will either turn him into straight up coonhound or he won't be fit to feed. It's 50/50

If she does tree coons a shock collar is what you need. When she gets on a possum give her a pop with the collar. If she don't get the picture shock her til she cant move with that collar then grab her and give her a kick in the rear and tell her to get on somewhere. If she don't learn after a couple of times ain't no hope.
I have heard other things like put a possum and the dog in a barrel and roll them down a hill lol
With a deer let the dog out when you know or have seen deer and the second that dog opens up lay um down with that shock collar.

I'm totally against SEG's way of training a dog. Shock collars are not made to be used that way. No wonder PETA and other groups dislike the hunter so much.
The only way you should ever hit a dog that hard with a shock collar is if they are in danger like running towards a road or attacking someone. It doesn't take much to make a dog understand. Collars are used to enforce training, not train. They have to know what they are getting the shock for. You will totally mess up a dog using the collar wrong. Send it too many times in my 35 years of coon hunting.

At 4 - 5 its going to be a tough road. If you have somewhere you can put out feeders and get her on some hot tracks it's possible to break her. Of course you have to get her excited and pet her up good after shooting the coons out to her. Using the shock collar ethically is the key if you try to break her off possums.
Possums usually tree fast... Within a few minutes if your dog has any speed. Hunting dogs where the coon numbers are low can cause a dog that would not normally tree a possum to do it. If they hunt 30 minutes and don't hit a track they will pick up a possum, cat or deer if they are not hard broke. Good luck, youre gonna need it at that age. I've seen it done at 2-3 but it's not an easy task. If your dog will come when called, try hunting her close instead of letting her hunt wide... Making several cast.

Don't take much to make them understand? Your dog understand english or something lol? If you have corrected the dog and they know better than to run trash and they still keep running, they don't make that high stimulation for nothing. All I'm saying is if my dog gets after a deer and acts stupidly stubborn I'm gunna pop her good with it if I have already corrected her for it and she knows better. But each to his own. Never shocked a dog like that but I figure that's just one way to get it in a stubborn dogs head.
But ill just shut up from now on don't want the PETA people after me!

I had a walker male. I bought him when he was 2 years old and had never been out of the pen. The first year i had him he treed 20 possums and 3 coons. I almost got rid of him several times but i stayed the course. The next year he treed 35 coons and 6 possums. The first year I whipped him, shocked him whipped him with a possum tied a possum around his neck. Nothing seemed to work. The next year I went to the tree, snapped the lead on him, talked ugly to him and lead him about 150 yards and turned him loose again. Dont know if it will work with your dog but he turned out to be the best i ever owned.

all dogs are different in how they relate to pressure and amount required to get a correction ive had them that i could yell at and that was all it took and also have seen them that they dont make a collar strong enough. if the age is 4-5 years then your going to have a long rd. with pups i usually praise them big time on a coon.if i had one tree off id just pull them off no praise(if they are just getting treeing good)after they are treeing good and they tree off game they got a correction.. if you cant fix it some where in west tenn. they have a possum hunt every year

A little coon fur in her mouth can go a long way. Like SilverFox said, get her on some hot tracks and put some hide in her mouth while season is still in. And like hoot owl said. Some times a dog can be like a person. You can be rough with them and they will still be unruly. Talk to them and handle them sternly but with a little sense about you could go along ways. I have used level 6 on my TT one time on my male dog. I was watching him work on the Garmin one night and he struck a trail as hot as I'd ever heard him go. They way he was headed, he was going straight to a field. Across this field was the road, and he was going fast. I said to myself, self ain't no coon in his right mind gonna cross a wide open field with a hound on his heels with 300 acres of ridge behind him. Deer was my first thought. This was the first time I'd had any deer trouble with him mind you, and was determined it would be the last. I already had him trained to come back on the tone but he wasn't slowing down. I jacked it up on 6 as I was headed that direction and let it eat. When I found him he was coming up the road with his tail tucked. He hasnt ran a deer since but has treed coons. When done at the right time a little juice can do wonders.

My friend trapped two possums killed them then left them in his dogs kennel to rot in july. His dog will not even look at a possum now. The dog was 6 years old and had been treeing possums all his life.
