here is my question.. why... would a herd of bucks all of a sudden want to jump in and swim across a pond?? if deer do drink water..(which I have never seen happen in 35 years of deer watching) why would they have to walk out into the middle to get a sip?? why not just stand on the edge like other animals do in the winter?? one of the deer was a doe and I'd bet she took a step too far and the bucks followed after
Thats what the TWRA agent believes and I do also. I watched them dig those several years ago and they are all at least 20-30 feet deep and drop at a very steep grade.

I still find it hard to believe that many deer would just jump in and drown. And why would some of them be out of the water?
They where all in the water floating and I could see by the way they where floating that at least 3 had a set on em so I cut down a sapling long enough to get out to them and pulled them to me, got the first one spun around, grabbed its leg and drug him onto the bank and basically did that with all four that I pulled out.

IMO, the pics make it seem unlikely that that many adult deer drowned. Banks do not appear to be that steep.
They are very steep, the pics do not do it justice, most of the ones around town here are fenced off and have swimming pool buoys stretched across in two places just in case someone was to fall in, cause there is no way anyone or anything can get out, they are that steep and with the liner, slicker than gopher guts on a garden gate.

Yes they are getting eat on now that I pulled them out onto the bank.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were poisoned and sought water. How long have the ponds been there? I would be surprised that deer were just now drowning if it wasn't the first year they were in.
