On my way to the job this morning in Williamson County, I noticed what appeared to be 2 deer floating in a retention pond, my first thought was that I could be two bucks that got tangled up and ended up in the pond and died. Well my assumption was pretty close except it ended up being 5 deer, 4 of them where bucks and another was unreachable but Im thinking it too was a buck. Very crazy to say the least. None of them where actually locked up but its just weird to me that five deer would drown in a little bitty pond like that but possible since its one of those new types that drops off steep and lined with a rubber lining. It was awfully stinky as well but if someone in the Franklin area wants some horns they are just east of Carothers on Liberty pike. Here is a few pictures.

That's crazy. I'll be interested to hear opinions on what caused this.

No signs of bullet holes? It is hard to think that they could have drowned since deer are good swimmers. Maybe it's like Andy said. They fell in, couldn't get out and froze to death?

None of them had bullet holes in them that I could see, they could have been spooked up, ran in the water and just in front of where im standing the depth drops off almost straight down combined with the slippery rubber liner they may not have been able to get traction. Who knows, But I am looking forward to responses and opinions.

That picture has EHD written all over it. It is all to common of a sight here in West Central Indiana in recent years. EHD is transmitted from the midge fly. Areas with high deer densities get hit the hardest.Typically the worst outbreaks occur after flooding as the Midge fly lays it larvae in the mud flats that the receding waters leave behind. This will also occur in severe drought conditions as the water evaporates and leaves mud flats behind. What have your weather conditions been in recent weeks? While scouting this past summer my son and I found a total of 12 dead deer at various ponds on this particular farm. Several weeks back I watched a show that Micheal Wadell was hosting and it was about the massive EHD kill on the Milk River in Montanna. It was very sad to say the least. They found deer after after deer lying dead upon the banks and in the water. While filming a buck came to the river and waded in and started swimming in circles until he became to exhausted to carry on and drowned. The worst about this disease is that there is nothing they can do about it.

I'm guessing EHD would be highly unlikely at this time of year but I certainly don't know that for sure. just speculation. The ice theory sounds like a good one. There may be a doe that was in heat out there in the middle somewhere.

Thats what he told me. Said that our area really hadnt seen EHD since Aug. 07. And that it was very rare to happen in winter time.

Will be interesting to hear what they come up with. I still say EHD. Simply because it's not really been cold last yr and this yr ain't been cold either except a couple days. That's why we had such a horrible yr with ticks, snakes, and mosquitoes. And this is following one of the worse droughts we've seen in several yrs...watering holes were dried up and deer simply flocked to water they could find...spreading disease and comimg into contact with the little bugs that cause EHD. Seems plausible to me anyway.

my guess ehd or other disease . does not appear that any predators or scavengers have eaten any of the carcasses . too diseased to eat? when you see diseased dead deer on hunting shows they never seem to be eaten on by scavengers . its not that cold if this is in the south. always end up at or near water. arm chair biology for a dum redneck that stayed at a roach motel (once) called the star.

Why only bucks? I would venture to bet maybe a group got in there and just couldn't get out due to the slick lining. As someone else mentioned maybe the un identified deer in the middle is a doe and the bucks were drawn by her scent into the pond. Weird either way.

Think your dead on with that. I talked with the officer a bit ago and he also found 2 more and possibly a 3rd in the next pond which brings the total to 8. He said that they might end up testing the water but EHD is pretty much ruled out. Those ponds are very dangerous since they do drop almost straight down and with a little algea they get even slicker. He strongly believes that they all just got in and could never get out. The one deer on the other side never did get identified due to it being kinda unreachable but Id be willing to bet that it was a doe. All the bucks had hard horns so it would likely put them in the beginning of early rut so Im going with drowning as the cause unless TWRA rules otherwise and the officer did say he would be in contact with me should anymore investigating take place. Sucks they died in such a horrible way. Those little ponds are springing up everywhere for irrigation purposes and I believe they should have to fence them off or something. If I hear from TWRA on anything more Ill be sure a keep yall posted.

I reached the 5 th deer in the pond today. It had drifted to shore. It was covered in algae around the head, but I could not see any horns. Could have broken off but it was also much smaller bodied like a doe. I didn't see the other 3. I was on my way to go fishing so me and my buddy left after determining the ponds had no fish in them.

When I get the chance I'm going to go back there and take a long stick and poke around and see if the pond drops off real steep or something. Also want to get some of my own pics since i left the phone and camera in the truck when I went to look.

Dang! What a shame. I used to hunt in those woods around those ponds years ago, way back before McKays Mill was even a thought. Liberty was just a small curvy two lane road.
Several nice bucks have been taken off that small parcel. I hate to see that happened to the deer.

I almost thought about asking permission from whoever manages the property for mckays mill. would be a shot in the dark but what if you actually could get permission to bow hunt before they develop the woods into houses and stores. Some nice looking woods out there. I'm gonna have to walk around and look for some sheds or something.

Thanks for the update. Yeah, definitely, if the pond is that slick they need to put a chain link fence around it before some child wonders into the water and drowns. If I'm not mistaken you said it was a fairly populated area. I've never been there, of course, but I could just imagine some kids playing around back there and someone getting hurt. Talk about a huge liability! I hope someone let's the company/property owner know so that they are now on notice about how dangerous it is. I dare say if a deer can't get out of there an 8 year old boy couldn't either.

Got to thinking...we have 3 large lined ponds where I work. And, I can see how if you even lost your footing it would be like a slip 'n' slide and in you go. I don't know how the [censored] you'd get out...especially if the water is a little low and the top liner is exposed to the point that is the only thing you can reach up to.

I most certainly hope so.

Seems that if they are going to make pond liners like that, they should have a special edge with strips of tread, for human or animal alike. At minimum, a couple of treaded strips/planks in a couple of spots around the pond.

Ugly, ugly stuff.

Glad to hear they do not think it is EHD.

I guess there is no way we will ever know the whole story, but like Outdoor Crazy said, that is a whole population of bucks wiped out. Very said.

Maybe its just me..but from the pictures.. I dont see a "straight down bank" anywhere.. looks like your standing on the edge of a normal sloped bulldozer dug pond?? If you can walk down there and drag them out.. why could they have not walked out? thanks!

it could slope more steeply under the water. I'm probably going to go poke it with a long stick and see if I can feel how steep the slope is under water.

I live in the neighborhood right past where these deer were found. I saw all the bucks alive around New Years(Had to stop and let them cross Liberty Pike). All deer looked in great shape. I thought it looked like deer floating in there but did not stop, first saw it last week.

After reading through all these replys, my take is somehow they were poisoned. Columbia State Community college is building a new campus on that site, they started site work the last couple of weeks. I wonder if they could have gotten into something.

FWIW on those ponds, my kids have played around them and I watched them get built, there is enough traction and foliage around them to help the deer get out. Deer are tough creatures and those ponds have been there for a few years and those are the first deer I have seen or heard about in there.

that's just weird, I hope they find the cause of death. You don't think it would be in the pond water do you?

I was thinking it could be the water, as you said, I always look for ducks. Have not seen any in a while there. Something is up though. I don't think they died by natural causes.

the water was full of big tadpoles. If there is poison in the water then it would have to affect deer but not frogs. If there is any substance that could do that. I doubt the ponds are poisoned.

But isnt it late in the season to be dying from EHD....i thought that was over in sept and or oct......have not heard of them dying that late in the season from it????

Frogs are one of the 1st species to show signs from polluted water.
Be careful poking around there you don't fall in yourself Catman. Seems drowning is the most likely cause. Someone should notify county officials of the danger.

I will definitely be careful in case the pond liner is the cause... if it's safe, then I may have me a new frog gigging spot for the summer \:D

Hey y'all I got an update -

I am just leaving the ponds now. I found 2 of the other deer mentioned, one out of the water was just a skeleton (may have been dragged out)

But, I think I found the cause... I took a sapling and poked around in the water. A few feet from shore, the bottom drops off very steeply. The ponds are lined in the black rubber. I think they are too steep for the deer to escape. I was standing in 6 inches of water with boots because the recent storms raised the water a bit. Within arms reach with the stick I could feel the bottom drop at a very steep angle down to 2 or 3 ft deep within 2 or 3 ft horizontally. I don't know how deep the ponds are but it wouldn't matter if the deer could never climb back out.

I still find it hard to believe that many deer would just jump in and drown. And why would some of them be out of the water?

IMO, the pics make it seem unlikely that that many adult deer drowned. Banks do not appear to be that steep.

the bank is not steep above water but once the water gets a foot deep or so it drops off real quick. I can see how a swimming deer could not get its hooves to grip on the pond liner while floating in the pond. You have to be at the ponds to see what I mean. Geezer says they get very deep.

The ones out of the water were probably dragged out. Actually I only saw one out of the water and it was a skeleton of a button buck. The rest were still in the ponds.

here is my question.. why... would a herd of bucks all of a sudden want to jump in and swim across a pond?? if deer do drink water..(which I have never seen happen in 35 years of deer watching) why would they have to walk out into the middle to get a sip?? why not just stand on the edge like other animals do in the winter??

one of the deer was a doe and I'd bet she took a step too far and the bucks followed after

Thats what the TWRA agent believes and I do also. I watched them dig those several years ago and they are all at least 20-30 feet deep and drop at a very steep grade.

They where all in the water floating and I could see by the way they where floating that at least 3 had a set on em so I cut down a sapling long enough to get out to them and pulled them to me, got the first one spun around, grabbed its leg and drug him onto the bank and basically did that with all four that I pulled out.

IMO, the pics make it seem unlikely that that many adult deer drowned. Banks do not appear to be that steep.

They are very steep, the pics do not do it justice, most of the ones around town here are fenced off and have swimming pool buoys stretched across in two places just in case someone was to fall in, cause there is no way anyone or anything can get out, they are that steep and with the liner, slicker than gopher guts on a garden gate.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were poisoned and sought water. How long have the ponds been there? I would be surprised that deer were just now drowning if it wasn't the first year they were in.
