My advice would be to go to a range that lets you rent various guns and let her shoot some. What I like might not work for her and vice versa. Have her try everything. Semi autos and revolvers. For home protection, get her a good shotgun. I have a Kahr cw40 and a LCP in 380 for carry. If I had to grab a pistol for defense use at home, I would go for stik's 1911 or my 40.
Best advice I've seen here. They fit everyone a little differently, and trying them out is the best way to know.

X whatever times .... on trying several out at the range first...but I'd start with a revolver easy to reload and easy to carry without one in the chamber but can fire if the trigger is pulled .... And if going in a purse I wouldn't worry about a pocket size gun...most women I've heard say anything about the LCP or s&w bg 380 talk about how much they hurt. My wife loves shooting my sr9c but struggles gripping the slide to pull it back. She is going to rent some guns in the next week or so to see what she likes. Right now she likes the s&w bg380. It doesn't bother her. I may let her keep it. But she really really likes my sr22. I may have to try and find her one....

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ RIGHT THERE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Rent some - borrow some - shoot several, then decide.

Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 Gotta agree. If she's on a budget, Bersa .380.

A semi-auto may come later, but right now a revolver is in the works for her.

Can't be a J-frame S&w in .357 or .38 - small, light and will get the job done -

Fiancée just got the Berretta PX4 Storm Sub-Compact 9mm. She loves it. She shot a .380 but she felt it kicked more than the solid frame of the PX4. It also has a decocker and ambidextrous safety which made me more comfortable about her carrying it.
I am considering purchasing the compact in .40.
