"Who ever said 'A bad day of fishing is always better than a good day at work' never had their boat sink." — Author Unknown

These pictures are reportedly that of a boat in Panama fighting a 500+ lb marlin and going down with it. The fishing captain that forwarded these pictures guessed that their bilge and high water alarms may not have been working as they were backing down on the fish.

By the way, that's one heckuva fish that they had on that line.

The fish wasn't the problem.

From the looks of the last pic-the fish might become part of the problem.

If you look at the second to last picture, the guy on the right side of the boat just has his hands up like "oh well"

priceless!

Glad there was someone close though!

When you go out in the big pond like that, you effectively lower yourself one notch on the foodchain.

The guy in the last pic looks like he is moving towards "higher ground" and is practicing "every man for himself".

I mean, at what point do you think they all had the conversation...

"Well the boat is sinking...do we cut the line and save the boat or keep fighting this thing?"

"I don't know boys, this is one he!! of a fish, I hate to let him go. Screw the boat, let's reel this sucker on in!"

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a very taut fishing line wiht a thrashing fish at the end...let alone trying to snip one. Pick your injury...fishing line whiplash or exhaustion from treading water?

Guys, the line and the fish were not the problem. The drag on the reel is set so that the fish can still pull line. When really big fish like these marlin and giant tuna are hooked, part of the fight involves putting the boat in reverse and backing down on the fish to help retrieve line. This is done during the fight to keep the fish from spooling the real and it's also done near the end of the fight to help get the fish close enough to the boat so the mate can grab the leader and release the fish. The danger when you put a boat like this in reverse is that the stern can plow downwards as it's backing up and water can start to pour over the stern. Once that happens the problem feeds on itself because the stern becomes heavier from the water that's pouring in and it plows down even further. In a very short amount of time the stern can quickly end up under water, like it did with this boat. If you look closely at the pictures you will see that this all happened pretty quickly. There was very little time for the Captain to realize what was happening and react by throwing the throttle from reverse to forward. Cutting the line would have done nothing unless the Captain would have also moved the throttle forward to raise the stern.
