I had a few things to pick up at Lowes yesterday. Mostly just a little OSB and some sheetrock. So I hooked up the 8' trailer and headed to Cookeville.

As I was gathering these few items, I was offered a LOT of additional lumber for a great price since inventory was coming up and they needed to clean out some Cull.

On top of my OSB, I also got a case of siding, 12 or so 16' 2x10, 2x12, 7 bundles of shingles, 2 rolls of roll roofing and a few other small items.

The only way to fit this stuff on the trailer was to lay it across the front fence of the trailer and strap ti down tight. I used the shingles to weight down the front of the trailer as much as possible. Then I strapped it all down with tie-downs.

"Good to go"!!!!

1 mile on 40 the trailer stars swaying. I pull over and check the load. I move a few more bundles up closer tot he front.

"Good to go"!!!!

1 mile further down I-40 and the trailer starts swaying and I 'bout lose it.It's cutting back and forth so hard that it's jerking the the truck. I pull over and take almost everything off and re-stack the load with the 16' lumber first and I slide it up through the fence until it's only 10" from my rear bumper. Then I stack the shorter lumber just forward of center on the trailer and finish with the Shingles

"Good to go"!!!

No more swaying and the trailer is balanced well. 1 mile from home, I hear "CLUNK, BOOM, Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee".

I hit the brakes and look in my mirror. The trailer is GONE!!!! But then I see this beautiful fireworks display out my side window.

"Oh, THERE's my trailer!!!!! - It's passing me!!!!!"

The tongue completely broke off, snapped the safety chains and it's plowing asphalt and making purdy sparks.

I go home, get the 16' trailer that I would have taken in the first place if I had known I was going to be hauling so much home. The wife and I transfer the load to the big trailer and I tie the 8' to the back of the 16' with tie downs and pull them BOTH that last mile or so home.

Ever have one of them days?

Two times in my life I was good to go - my safety chains saved me.

Always turns out bad when your trailer passes you!

Thanks,

I'm SO glad that tongue snapped on a single lane, Co road. For 90% of my trip, I was on 2-4 lane hwys with oncoming traffic.

The lord was looking out for me, no doubt.

I'd say the pucker factor was a little high? There is so much that can go wrong when pulling a trailer. If you ever want to see honest to goodness crazy, drive through Houston during the week. I never new trailers and concrete mixers could be pulled at 90 mph. There's plenty of evidence that some can't. Glad it worked out for you.

I was cringing the whole time while reading your story...yikes. Indeed you were fortunate that the trailer didn't eat your rear end for lunch.

I have NO DOUBT, the good Lord held that trailer together until it was safe for the inevitable to happen. There was 40 miles of deadly road before the point and only about 2 miles of "safe" road.

The trailer broke right in the middle of the safest place for it to fail.

"Coincidence" doesn't begin to explain that timing.

Similar situation, but the tire blew out. Jack didn't have enough a$$ to lift the trailer plus the load on the trailer.

This was the scissor style with about a ř3/4" threaded rod as the lift mechanism. Like I said.....inadequate a$$. In order to generate the force required, it'll bend the cheap little crank handle.

I am happy to say I have never had anything like that happen to me. \:\) You were indeed lucky.

However, this post got me to thinking. I have been waiting for warmer weather to hook up my trailer and haul some horse manure to my garden. After reading this, think I will just use my truck and leave the trailer at home. \:D

My dad called me one time to bring my winch to get his 20 foot trailer out of the woods just off I-55 just north of Jackson MS. Safety chains had broke. As he was passing a car at 75 mph. he hit a bridge bump and the trailer came undone. The guy in the car said he saw it was not latched and blew his horn to get their attention. Whe my dad asked his employee did you not latch the trailer down the employee said yeah I cranked the handle down until the foot came off the ground. I told my dad as the driver he should have checked it. Lol. I could tell he wanted to hit me.

Got started on the repair/rebuild. I had 47" of 2" square tubing. I've cut off the old tongue a foot or so back and then cut the bottom of the tubing back another 18" under the trailer. I heated up the old tongue and pressed the new tubing into the old. I'm going to run two 5/8" bolts through and then weld the seams.

I can see a slight twist in the old metal and keeps the hitch end from being square. It's not TOO bad, but I'm going to try and twist that out before I put the new hitch on.

Should be "Good to go" in another day or so \:D

Watched a small boat pass its owner once as he came off Alcoa Hwy onto Neyland. Driver and passengers were laughing until they realized it was theirs. Crossed Neyland and hit the guardrail. This was during Knoxville rush hour and luckily no cars were coming either way.

Two of my buddys was going fishing one night a few years ago. The one that owned the boat picked my other buddy up at his house. He put his gear in the boat, then they headed to the boat ramp. He said he pulled up at the dock and started to back the trailer in the water. Then he noticed the boat and trailer wasn't behind the truck. They back tracked and found it sitting in a store parking lot at the gas pumps like someone pulled up there and dropped the trailer right there.

LOL! I'm glad everything turned out ok. I lost a boat and trailer once on 240 and 40 in Memphis. One inch scratch on the right fender and broken 1 7/8 ball was all the damage I had. The good lord was watching out for the car behind me and the 18 wheeler beside me when it all came loose.

Well I would say that you were fairly lucky to only end up with a snapped trailer tongue

I worked at a boat dealership in high school. Once I had a winch stand break when a lady in a station wagon full of small children pulled out in front of me.

A 22 foot run about in the bed of your pickup truck is not a lot of fun when your a 17 year old kid. The back of the boat was still on the trailer the bow of the boat was about 12 inches from the back of the truck cab. And the truck seat was firmly placed in my colon!

Glad you are okay CL. I feel your pain.
