My wife has shot several of mine, and the only one she likes is the G26. So.. I got her one. 
AndyW recommended the Bodyguard .380. It's a great size gun, but it can be pretty snappy and uncomfortable to shoot. I personally like it a lot, but I've let several people shoot mine (before I sold it) and quite a few of them thought it was uncomfortable to shoot. One of my buddies (he's 225 pounds) said it downright hurt his hands after a half dozen shots.

My girlfriend is selling me her Springfield XD 40S&W because she doesn't like shooting it. It was the first firearm she ever purchased and shot. Some guy at Cabela's recommended it to her a few years ago. It has been sitting idle in her safe for over 3 years. She wants to replace it with another pistol for home protection & self defense. She wants something that she will enjoy practicing with. She may eventually pursue a concealed carry license in Texas. I will admit that I know very little about pistols. What pistol would you recommend for a female in this situation? She is of average female height but is a little on the light side.
My mom is a small framed woman, and had never shot a pistol before. She was pretty intimidated by the whole thing, but has really gotten into it bigtime. She's found that her preferred round is a .380, and she just bought a Sig P238. It's a great gun, but it can be difficult to field strip. For a .380, I've always been a fan of the Bersa Thunder .380. It's a double-stack mag, so it holds (I think) 10 + 1, is small enough to carry easily, but big enough for most mens' hands....plus, it's very inexpensive. If you can find them in stock, they're probably still going for $300 or less.

If your female friends have medium to smaller sized hands you should encourage them to go to a gun store and try a Kahr 9mm. They are smaller profile gripped than guns like compact glocks or sigs.
Ive never known a woman to handle a Kahr and not immediately want to buy it

She really needs to get her hands on as many pistols as she can... and pick a few she thinks feel good in her hands, and take those for a test shoot.

Yep....this is really what it boils down to.
1) Try them out at the case
2) Rent them at the range
3) Buy what feels best.
Oh, and avoid pushing in the direction of the "pocket carry" pistols like the RUGER LCP or the Kel Tec P3AT. They kick like a mule, despite being "cute" little guns.

Agree fully on the LCR in .38 - I can almost guarantee she will not enjoy shooting it. Same for the P3AT.
And even though this may be against the grain - don't be scared of a .22lr pistol. People can say what they want, but she's better off with a .22 she *will* carry and shoot proficiently and comfortably than the .38 or 9mm she leaves at home in the safe.

Thanks for the all feedback. Lots of good suggestions. It has been very helpful. I think we are going to start with a revolver for her and see where it goes from there.
Regarding the XD 40 - is that a decent pistol?

This. Pocket pistols are the neat to carry, but tough to shoot. I had a light .380 (S&W Sigma 380) that was uncomfortable to shoot. I finally sold it.
Otherwise, try as many as you can at the range. She'll "know" when she holds the "right" gun in her hands.

My wife shoots shoots shoots her Beretta Nano with full power loads. Recoil is not a problem unless you let it be.

You absolutley need to look at the Walther PK380. I bought this gun for myself and took my wife (who had never shot a gun before) to the range. I let her shoot that gun and it is now considered "her gun". It is a sweet shooting gun. Doesnt have much recoil and the grip is thinner so it will fit her hands well. It really is a great gun
