Poser and I hit up the Ghost River section of the Wolf River WMA yesterday to chase after some squirrels. Unfortunately, the woods were absolutely dead to life, and there were barely even little birds stirring, let alone any squirrels.
So after a couple hours, we tromped through the brush in an effort to scare up some rabbits. All of a sudden, I spooked a bird up and it flew off....in the 1/10th of a second it took to register "HEY, THAT'S A QUAIL!", it was gone.
Fun morning, overall, despite not seeing anything to shoot at. Still a privileged feeling to see two quail in the wild.
Good meeting you, Poser, and thanks again for showing me around out there.

I doubt it. Neither bird had a long bill.

We parked at the Ghost River parking area off of Leatherwood Road. Beyond that, I was following Poser through the area.

Gotcha. We were down off of Beasley rd. Saw a couple of trucks pulled off around the bridge over the ghost. It was slow for us also.

So few quail in the wild now it would make me feel bad to shoot one.

Sounds like a woodcock. Although, I did bump a lone quail today. I also bumped a woodcock today. They both make completely different sounds when they fly. Almost all of the time, quail are in a covey when I flush them, it was odd to only flush one today. Must have been flushed recently and hadn't regrouped yet.

As easy a squirrel hunting would seem to hunters who don't squirrel hunt, you get these days in the late season when, for whatever reason, the squirrels just don't move. It wasn't too cold, but it wasn't too warm. There was very little wind. High 30s, low 40s, 3 mph wind and you'd expect to see squirrel activity, yet we didn't see or hear a single one.
