My girlfriend is selling me her Springfield XD 40S&W because she doesn't like shooting it. It was the first firearm she ever purchased and shot. Some guy at Cabela's recommended it to her a few years ago. It has been sitting idle in her safe for over 3 years. She wants to replace it with another pistol for home protection & self defense. She wants something that she will enjoy practicing with. She may eventually pursue a concealed carry license in Texas. I will admit that I know very little about pistols. What pistol would you recommend for a female in this situation? She is of average female height but is a little on the light side.

My advice would be to go to a range that lets you rent various guns and let her shoot some. What I like might not work for her and vice versa. Have her try everything. Semi autos and revolvers. For home protection, get her a good shotgun. I have a Kahr cw40 and a LCP in 380 for carry. If I had to grab a pistol for defense use at home, I would go for stik's 1911 or my 40.

How big are her hands?

I ask because I've got female friends who are short, skinny, and completely and utterly girly, but their fingers are long and they can handle larger frame weapons. I know two of them who can handle full sized 1911's about as easy as I can. I also know some ladies who have tiny hands and short fingers and they're more comfortable with subcompacts.

To be sure, this is going to require her to go to a range and handle a bunch. However, my generic answer is this:

Small girl with small hands: Ruger LCP .380, S&W 642 J-Frame .38, Baby Glocks (Leaning toward the 9mm version), Subcompact anything in either 9mm or .40 S&W.

Typical lady with average strength: Whatever she likes at the gun shop.

Five shot, double action only .38 Special such as a Ruger LCR or one of several Smith & Wesson J-frames. Keep it simple.
