I need to catch some bait to try a new brine method for spring trot line.
Anybody catching any shad, carp, buffalo, brim, or anything up in the rock island area?

I'm surprised there is any bait in there with all the Musky and Walleye moving up into the upper ends near the dam getting ready to spawn.

I tried salting shad last spring. Put 2 inches of salt in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket then a layer of shad. Filled the bucket with layers while I was at the dam catching them. They kept good all summer and I still have some. I used a few on jugs every time I went out. Never lost a shad or caught a fish on one. I was sure hoping they would catch fish. They toughen a little and sure are easier to handle than frozen shad. Don't plan to salt any this year.
