My brother and I went out scouting today via the river and we found some great spots to deer hunt. The only problem is, with the water level low, we have to walk across some serious sloughs and mud flats with crazy sucking mud. This mud is the kind of stuff that almost came to the tops of my Lacrosse Burleys, and wanted to keep my boots everytime that I took a step.
Who has experience with this stuff, and what remedy (especially homemade) do you recommend to counter this issue. I thought about making some plywood "snowshoes" for this, but I was wondering if they would want to form a vaccum on top of the mud or something.

this sounds crazy but have you thought of trying tennis rackets with some laminate plastic on them.

I agree with the racket idea, get good width and spread the weight out

This is a question for duck hunters. I don't really duck hunt anymore and this is one of the reasons I don't. My friends and I refer to it as walking in peanut butter. I have tried snow shoes and they did not work because of the way they are attached to your feet. Plus they are a real pain to get in and out of when you are wearing waders. There were some specifically designed for mud that were similar to snow shoes that cabelas used to carry. Unfortunately I never bought any to find out if they worked.
One idea I had that I never tried was to take a pair of walking sticks and attach small plywood boards to the bottom of them. The boards being like 12 inches square or something like that. You can place your feet on the boards and lift them with your hands as you walk. You can also use them to help lift you out of the mud if you get stuck. The issue with this idea is that you can't use your hands for carrying gear. It would have to be on your back or slung over your shoulder.
