I put my ruger in the back of the closet until I picked up my safe. When I pulled it out here is what it looked like. The corrosion doesn't really want to come off never had a stainless do such. The closet must have quite a bit of moisture. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Very, very fine steel wool with oil. You might be able to polish it up with that.

Never tried the transmission fluid, but I would start with that since it's least abrasive. Good luck.

For alum. use WD-40, it will kill the oxidation in the alum. Use a brass brush or alum. brush,(auto stores carry them) Do not use anything that will rust, (steel wool, steel bristle brush)small particals will get into the alum and eventually rust or cause more oxidation later down the road.

I would attempt the polish the receiver, but I doubt you will get all the marks out. You can clean it up really well, tape it off and paint it with alum. Rustoleum and then clear it after.

That was my thought exactly...although I didnt look or think far enough to see it was Al. Looking at my own pic it is completely obvious. Never heard abt the trans fluid though so I have gained some ideas here. Thanks everyone!

Don't kid yourself, stainless will rust also. As for the aluminum receiver, If you know someone that has a media blaster, that will clean it up nicely.

I would media blast the whole thing. The barrel will turn to a Ruger Target Grey color. I do all of my stainless smokeless builds in this manner.Looks pretty good IMO.

Ok tried trans fluid and several Al polish no go. It did make it shine but refuses to turn loose of the corrosion. DTC whats your price on blasting? That is interesting havent thought much about that. What media is used for such?

Amen...one of the biggest misconceptions I used to run into in the gun business. I would have guys swear up and down they had to have a SS rifle so it would be "all weather" or even better guys that wouldn't have a muzzleloader unless it had a SS barrel. I'd tell them you know SS will still rust. Of course, they would argue with me adamantly until a pulled a SS gun down off the shelf that had been there a while and had been handled a lot only to see it had indeed some light rust. Rust may not be the right term technically, but SS will pit and it will oxidize.
