way I understand it is that food placed to attract wildlife is baiting and you can't hunt near it... even if you put "deer corn" out and coons are eating it... I just wanted to double check to be sure. Because I sure would like to go out and sit by my corn pile at night and shoot the coons that are eating it. I would like to say it's "property damage" but I don't think that would pass with TWRA. ;\) So can I get an official answer? Is shooting coons over "deer corn" illegal?

If I understand the law regarding hunting over bait it says that it's not illegal to put out bait but it has to be gone 10 days prior to hunting at that spot. How do you go about proving either way that the bait has been gone 10 days?

Our officers document bait sites and gather evidence. The bait isn't gone until the last kernal is gone.

Occasionally we walk up on baited areas with someone hunting over bait, but in the majority of cases our officers know the bait has at least been there in the previous nine days.

Just out of curiousity what game draws the most "baiting" activity? I would think it'd be dove fields since they're so obvious...deer or turkey second????

You guys can get pretty sneaky, lol.

We have statutes that require us to post dove fields as baited if we have prior knowledge. Therefore, dove baiting cases are only made when we walk onto a field where we can observe the bait, or someone shoots a baited field that has been posted.

My guess is that baiting is fairly equally divided between deer and turkey. It seems that it is close to 50-50 between contraband rifles and shotguns that I take to General Services for their online auctions.

It happens. Our officers also have the option of going to federal court when it does.
