Biologist, help with this one please.

4 of the last 6 deer we harvested in Hardin County, late season,had for lack of a proper term signs of ”reddish mange” around the snout not quit extending to the eye area. The “effected” area didn’t seem to be infected but dry. The deer otherwise seemed healthy with clear coats, clean eyes and nostrils. Typical of a freshly harvested deer. One was a buck and 3 does. Any insight to what this might be? None of the other members have seen this before.

Unfortunately no, removing the chip from my camera I dropped it in the mud that evening. Needless to say “toast”.

It could be anything from a skin condition to affects caused by a preferred food source. Who knows where those deer had been sticking their noses. I will check my disease manual when I get back in the office on Monday, if I can remember.

I may have seen this on a deer that I killed a couple of years ago in Wayne County. When I walked up to it I thought that my shot had hit her lungs and she had blown the debris out of her nostrils. But when I looked closer I realized that the orange discoloration was dry. She seemed healthy so it didn't bother me. The processor didn't find anything wrong but did ask me what that "stuff" was on her snout.
It didn't give the appearnace of something that the deer had gotten into, but more like abnormal hair growth. Does that sound similar to what you saw?

I shot a buck in Hardin county about 10 years ago that had that same stuff on it. It looked like it ate cheetos. I was told by someone (and I can't remember who) that it was mites. If I'm not mistaken there was a discussion on here a while back about this.
It must be a local thing.

TN Charlie, Ghosthunter’s description is right on. Looked as if they got into a bag of “cheetos”. My processor asked me the same question. Other then the discoloration around the snout the deer were in typical good health. Wayne is next door to Hardin, I’m not aware of a “Frito Lay” plant around us (ha). Sorry for no images, I checked with the other members, they saw me take a few so they didn’t.
