Finally after 8 months it is here. In my opinion, bear shoulder mounts are always a little awkward since there are no antlers and the neck isnt very long like a deer. I was a little worried since I havent seen a ton that look really good but I am very pleased how this turned out. I am going to go after one with a bow in the next couple of years and I will definitely get the front legs done next time.

I need opinions....with or without the fern? I can't decide if I like the fern or not. Oh and sorry about the crappy wall. I'm at work and had to take a bunch of pictures off the wall \:D

A little moss might be cool, maybe even ivy, but not the fern. Otherwise, the bear itself is awesome! Envy strikes again.

I thought the exact same thing, that moss would have made it perfect. Wonder where I can find some...?

Give some thought to doing one with one shoulder and one leg as if stepping out. Just Do NOT have the leg reaching as though it is trying to paw something. Have it solid on the ground. I wish I had a picture of one to show you.

A one-leg/shoulder mount should not be any more expensive than a regular shoulder mount. They are not hard to do. The key is in the pedestal. I prefer a log to a rock and I like a lot of greenery with the foot and leg almost hidden.

I recent years, I have become somewhat of a fan of one side type mounts. They work so well in corners and there is so much that can be done with them. It was many years before I saw a bear mount that I would have had in my house. Lately, I have seen some great ones.

Possibly in the not so distant future, I will be bringing some of my mounts home from other locations. I have idea where I am going to put them. I have one or two that are somewhat "different".

This is one of my faves but I doubt I will bring it home. No place to put it. It looks great where it is and has been there many years.

Hobby Lobby, Michaels, maybe even Walmart would sell dried Spanish moss (or other types, some are fake) in their stores.

Some people are allergic to mosses, so I would see if good quality fake stuff is availalbe and you have less to worry about in that area.

You know, when you think about it, any game animal does not have to be the biggest you ever killed to make a great mount. Some of my favorites are way far not the biggest I have killed. The biggest bear I ever killed, I gave to the out fitter for his lodge because it did not mean a lot to me. It was, at that time, the biggest by over 100-pounds, ever killed out of that lodge. It was an easy, 11-yard shot on an old bear.

Yet, a 250-pound cinnamon I killed one year in Ont. meant a lot more to me as did a silky solid black that I killed on a snowy afternoon (in June) in Northern Sask. That bear scared me. Both are on my floor now to remind me of it. Both are smaller by 250-300 pounds than this one.

You can greenery or just about anything you want from a good taxidermist catalog. I use old antlers and arrows or empty shell casings to dress up mounts.

It was killed in Canada on the 3rd evening of a 4 day hunt. They had pictures of a 300 plus pound bear in there but it just didn't show itself while we were hunting. The weather did not want to cooperate. The first day it was extremely cold, rainy, and windy. Second day was beautiful but very windy. The third day when it was killed was perfect but it was the only bear we saw. The 4th day that we didn't hunt since this one was killed was very hot and probably would have been a bad hunt as well.

Here is a couple of trail cam pictures of what we think is this bear and then the last is a picture of the big one we were after. The one that was killed is actually a female but is perfectly legal since she did not have cubs. The canadian game warden aged her at 3 when he removed a tooth. It was about 225lb. Which is just slightly above average for the area we were hunting.

it wouldnt be that much more to the mount...but remember a form would probably still need two legs when ordering and now the taxidermist has to cut the form ..which isnt to hard as long as you cut straight LOL...plus tanneries charge by the linear foot on bears and dont care if you have one leg or two or 4 with feet or not..or they charge for shoulder, 1/2 LS or LS by the foot. ..so Id bet it would be the same cost as a half lifesize mount wherever you go..or IMO it should be...plus the cost of the base..which could be as big or small as youd need. But that is a cool ideal and if I get to do as planned come august. and my son gets one if plans come together. I may just do something like that for him.

JA1234 is correct that there would be more expense from the tanning and supply side of things and a more work on the taxidermist part in sewing and altering a form...and yes i would charge a 1/2 lifesize mount price for that

I have a bear shoulder mount that i did for myself in my shop for customers to see and do not like the way it looks, when i get caught up I will be doing a 1/2 lifesize bear (that I killed in canada last year), not sure if I will do the 1 leg or two leg thing yet but it will not be in an aggressive pose....probably a slight open mouth with habitat around it..

bowriter - love the lifesize buck...

I would add something greenish with it but not the fern. It looks dull and plain with out the fern but the fern you have with it is a little big for my likes. It almost seems that you are trying to hide something. X2 on the moss add a little here and there and maybe add a small fern or similar with that also but don't over do it.

It may be that you could secure a clump of moss by tucking it in between the rocks/log/mount. I refurbished the faux rock foam base on my coyote mount by securing moss into silicone caulking. You could do that, but you may want to minimize points of contact, I'm not sure.
