One of my hunting buds got tired of boot lugs catching in the grating of his treestands and "popping" at the wrong time when he moved. Since he hunts out of several hangons rather than using one climber, the comfort mats that attach to the stand weren't a good (or inexpensive) option.

Several months before the past season, he bought one of the little carpeted vehicle floor mats with the "knobby" things on the back side that grip the vehicle carpet. He cut a hole in one corner and used a D ring to attach it to his pack on the way in. He said it worked like a champ and did not slide under his feet in the stand. And, as an added benefit, he said it made a NOTICEABLE difference on his feet getting cold. I guess not having direct contact with the metal stand was the difference.

I bring it up now because he said the only issue is that the things stink to high heaven when new out of the store. He left his outside exposed to the sun and rain for several months to get rid of the rubber/carpet smell.

I intend to try it next fall.

They really do help with warmth and quietness. Some companies even make mats for thier stands, I know Summit does

^^Been telling guys this for years. It's common sense when you think about it. Think of a home radiator - just the opposite effect.

But first, one must walk thru a cow pasture, and pre-cover by walking thru a few piles.

Great tip, Steve. \:\)

I had never thought of that association until it was mentioned by several people this year. I bet there is a great deal of merit to that idea.

Go ahead and attach it to your stand now if you have a fixed stand. By next season the deer wont think about it even if theres some stink left in it.

I forget the hunter (some famous one...maybe greg or stan) but they would hang a piece of carpet upside down by there stand to have when they got there.

Upside down so snow and ice wouldn't pile up on the part you intended to stand on.

I will have to try that. I will need to be reminded when season gets here, though. Maybe someone could volunteer to remind me??? \:\)

Actually, if you are going to try it, you probably should grab one pretty soon and put it outside. The rubber and carpet smells take some time and sun and rain exposure to go away.

I believe the most popular ones are Husky brand floor mats. Might have to give that a try sometime.
