When we had our first baby 5 years ago I sold my standard cab truck and bought a cheap car off Ebay so that we could keep paying the bills and stay out of debt (that approach paid off!!).
I finally bought a used truck last spring (crew cab '06 F150 4x4).
In the time between, I loaded a couple of deer and a fair amount of small game into the trunk of my car when I couldn't borrow my dad or my brother's truck for a hunting trip.
Not having any sort of towing vehicle AND not having a truck made it pretty tough. I was borrowing vehicles pretty regularly. In '11 I got a receiver and trailer hitch installed on my wife's Ford Escape (V6), and that helped a bit.
I can honestly say that I wouldn't be 100% against getting a decent mid-sized flat bed trailer and selling my truck.
Primary reasons: 1 - gas is expensive when you are getting 15 MPG, which means that I only drive the truck on weekends anyway. Extra maintenance of a 3rd vehicle that needs a little work just adds to the expenses (insurance, oil changes, repairing stuff, tires in the next year, etc.). 2 - Most of my hunting spots are places I walk in, so the 4x4 gets very little use (that was half the reason I originally bought it) 3 - I don't own a boat, and my dad's boat is small enough that I could pull it with my wife's SUV. 4 - A trailer would replace the truck bed for those odd jobs.
All that said, I'm determined to go at least another whole year before deciding one way or the other. I keep telling myself that once I get a few things fixed on the truck, I'll like it better. It's also very nice to have a 3rd vehicle for backup that can easily carry the family around.

Got rid of my F150 and bought me an Acura TL type S and loved it especially the gas mileage. But with my lifestyle I needed to go back to a truck especially when the kid came along 2 years ago, bending over putting him the back seat of an Acura was gonna kill me at my age lol. Traded the Acura and got a Tundra it doesnt have the bells and whistles or the gas mileage but it gets the job done. Plus its hard to pull a boat with an Acura sports car.

I have driven and owned a truck since before I was legally allowed to do, 28 years worth and I just can't imagine anything any different.

Have had a truck for almost all my life. Started with a 1962 Studebaker when I was 16. Only time I did not have one was for a couple years from 08 to 10.

I'm always in my service van, even when hunting, but do plan on getting another truck or repairing my old one soon.

I went about 14 months without a truck. Had a 99 Wrangler and it just didn't cut it. Love a truck, just wish it got better gas mileage. If your shopping for trucks, do yourself a favor and avoid Chevy. My 07 Silverado was the biggest POS I ever owned. Never again will own a Chevy.
