What does everyone like to use?
I typically use just 50lbs of trace mineral salt. Problem is, it disappears after a hard rain. The deer still dig around and eat the dirt to get the salt. I've been wondering if the 50lb trace mineral salt blocks are better about this and if the deer will use them as well as the loose?
Anyone ever seen or heard of deer eating protein tubs put out for cattle or horse?

I usually use either 30-06 or Rack-Up because of their relatively low salt content and high mineral content. I rarely use pure salt since it has no real health benefit.
I did put out some CO-OP cattle protein blocks one time that I had left over from when we had cows. They rotted and the deer never touched them.

I'm sure trophy rock will win out on this one.
I put out a mixture this past year of (1) part Di-Calcium Phosphate, (1) Part Stock Salt, and (2) Parts Trace Mineral. I actually had some really good results at 2 of the 3 sites. I'm not a big fan of BLOCKS of salt or trace mineral.
Oddly enough, in years past trophy rock doesn't do that well for me. It seems to just sit there and dwindle away. No tracks around it or anything. But, the deer numbers and habitat have changed in my area and I'm going to try trophy rocks again this year.

When I start a new lick, I usually use a spade, turn up a small area and mix in a bag of loose white salt and then put a block on a board. I have used both the trace mineral blocks and Trophy Rocks in the past, and now just use trace mineral blocks. About 10 years ago I started two licks about 200 yards apart on the edge of the same field and used mineral blocks in one and Trophy Rocks in the other for 3 years. I had cameras over both and concluded from the number of deer pictures and buck versus doe usage that there was no clear preference, so I just save money and use mineral blocks. I have heard people say that the deer will not directly lick the block, but I have several hundred pictures I could post showing them licking the blocks as well as pawing and eating the dirt around them.

I prefer Trophy Rock due to the ease of transport and use. But any type of salt should work fairly well.
I would be careful with using anything formulated for horses or cattle. Deer are neither, and their dietary needs and restrictions quite different.

I use trophy rock and every year or two pour out a couple boxes of ice cream salt in the hole beside it..The deer really like to drink the water out of that salty hole.The trophy rock is on the side.
