Gonna try and get to courthouse today and transfer the registration of the boat I bought to my name.
I have a signed bill of sale from the guy I bought it from and his (expired) registration card, I assume that is what you call it.
Will I need to write down the serial number of the boat or motor or anything else before I go?
Thanks.

Yeah, they don't like freebies... no taxes collected.
They should be able to get the info from the expired registration card but take the number as well, I believe they call it a HIN (hull id number).
TN charges sales tax on purchases of new and used boats so when you go to register the boat they will charge you sales tax on the purchase price... that's why they don't like "free" boats and in those cases will usually charge you tax on the blue book value.

Yea, they have a fear that we might try to cheat them out of their taxes........and their yellow form for used boat/auto affidavit is essentially a way to try to get you to specify "reasonable" market value, and to explain why you didn't pay reasonable market value price, if you were fortunate to have gotten a deal, or a relative gave you something.
